That's why I love Oberths. They do more exploration, scanning, observing, and I also like the smaller crew sizes. I like that the Federation is about peace, and unity, and basically about working together to achieve a greater goal, rather than conquest like the Romulans and Klingons. Oberths exemplify that peaceful, multicultural, and the seeking knowledge aspect of bettering oneself.Teaos wrote:Oberths arent supposed to be anywhere near danger, they sit in orbit of a planet taking reading, they scan nebula ect, its not near any signifigant danger. It also doesnt go deepspace since it is so slow. It scans pre deicovered systems.

Re: What starship would you least like to captain?
I can see some appeal to an Oberth. Imagine going to a new planet and spending six months there instead of a day or two. Time to visit all the different regions, get up close and personal with the wildlife, see how things look in different seasons. Time to get involved with things.
But their employment leaves much to be desired. True we haven't seen them often, but sent to the Genesis planet? The most controversial place in the known galaxy at the time, which the Klingons were declaring as a military base, and they sent one Oberth, unescorted? Sent into battle with the Borg, for pete's sake? Did they really think it would do any good there?

Yeah. In Sisko's Wolf 359 flashback you see an Oberth as part of that fleet being destroyed.

Oh, and there's one in the First Contact fleet too. I guess if at first you don't succeed in combat...

What does defeat mean to you?
Nothing it will never come. Death before defeat. I don’t bend or break. I end, if I meet a foe capable of it. Victory is in forcing the opponent to back down. I do not. There is no defeat.

Check it out, 2:25 or so. It goes by very fast, but you can just catch it outside the windows.

Wow. That really is an Oberth at 2:31. Maybe Starfleet was using the Oberth as a test bed for explosions?

Is it stuff like this that brought about the "Starfleet is incompetent" argument on this board?
