Not really, AMD gets to sell chips what would otherwise get thrown out and buyers can get chips cheaper than a quad core but preforms better at multi-cored applications than a dual core. I have an Athlon II Tri-Core and it preforms great. Granted, not as well as the Phenom II because it lacks the L3 cache, but still a massive improvement over my old system.Nickswitz wrote:Wow, that's stupider than making one with only three cores.USSEnterprise wrote:AMD's Tri-Cores are defective quad cores that have a core disabled. I've just heard too many problems about them, mainly because most computers don't want to use the third core so they stress it too much and over-heat it. Because many motherboard will not use the Tri-Cores they only use two of the cores.

Re: What's the latest in people's lives?
Really? Huh, I've never heard of those problems. I got my computer built in about half and hour and everything works fine. It fully sees all three cores as well. The only thing I could see being a problem would be trying to plug a tri-core into an old AM2 socket motherboard that doesn't support it.Nickswitz wrote:I've just heard too many problems about them, mainly because most computers don't want to use the third core so they stress it too much and over-heat it. Re: What's the latest in people's lives?
Yeah, I think that was the problem with most of the issues, so it may not have been the cores that were the problem, just stupid people who can't set things up correctly.

The problem that a lot of AMD chips used to face was a problem with temperatures, in that if they ran too low it would hinder the performance. They needed a sort of optimum temperature. of course, gamers and those that worry about high temperatures installed super efficient fan systems, and even those Hydropowered cooling systems (I never got that, tube of water in the middle of an electronic box) and in the end it hindered performance. The Phenom architecture chipsets have eradicated that problem.
And the Radeon cards have always been some of the best graphics cards I have used.
And I guess I'll have to start checking out the Phenom architecture to see it's useability, as well as performance, personally I think the i series is much better than any AMD chip out there, but AMD will get it sometime.
Also Radeon I have used before, but only the really old ones, and no old card were decent, but yeah, I may start using AMD for the lower end machines I use, I say the lower end because they are generally cheaper than intel. So I'll be able to build up a decent one for almost 3/4 the price that I would pay with an intel chip.
So I just went out and destroyed an old fence piece that had been taken down.... It felt so good, I love breaking things..
I wouldn't touch an i series core with a barge pole. Intel have been nothing but trouble when we have had them, and the i series have been even worse for friends of mine.

Really, I've never heard any problems with it at all actually. I like them, I would love to have an i7 processor. It runs like a dream from everything I've seen.Reliant121 wrote:I wouldn't touch an i series core with a barge pole. Are you sure that wasn't ALDI, they sell Medion stuff all the time. The kit is of reasonable quality, not top notch but it does work. My dad's still got a Medion scanner somewhere.Reliant121 wrote:My parents found a pretty sweet deal at Lidl of all places. Its a prebuilt PC by Medion, with a 2.8Ghz Phenom II quad core, 4GB RAM (upgradable to 8GB), 2 Terabyte hardrives, and a ATI Radeon HD 5670 (I think) DirectX 11 Graphics card...GET IN THERE

We've had 6 of the things, and every single one either didn't clock the speeds they were meant to, or burnt out within a couple of weeks of purchase. And we always DID have adequate cooling systems.
And it was definitely Lidl. Me and mum dropped dad off before school.

Re: What's the latest in people's lives?
*sigh* So Dad's colon resection leaked and he was brought to emerg this week and had an emergency colostomy. It's supposed to be temporary (6-8 months) and then their going to reconnect his bum. Unfortunately they found stage three cancer in his bowels so he'll need chemo and he was shouting through his pain about some previously unknown (to us, though I suspected) shit that went down in Cyprus on his tour.
I'm hoping that he doesn't turn out to have PTSD.
Looks like I will be BC bound around the middle of April as he asked me to come out, a request I will not refuse.

Wait... they found the further (stage III) cancer only because they had to go in to repair the previous surgery?
Well, sh*t - I've heard that everything happens for a reason, but wow. I certainly would have wished your Dad didn't have any cancer at all, but thank G-d it didn't just sit there undetected and untreated.
