Really? It comes up all the time around here. Just the other day someone asked for a show of hands on who's a trek fanI don't think people in general know that I'm a Trek fan, but that's only because it's never come up in conversation before.

What does defeat mean to you?
Nothing it will never come. Death before defeat. I don’t bend or break. I end, if I meet a foe capable of it. Victory is in forcing the opponent to back down. I do not. There is no defeat.

Re: You in RL vs you online
I'm a little shy about being a Trekkie. I dunno, though. Something's wrong with that. Why do so many of us feel embarrassed by this? It's a great show! It has a healthy mix of intelligent social discourse, exciting action, hot girls in tight clothes, and don't forget optimism. How much optimism do we get to see elsewhere these days?
I think it has to do with anti-intellectualism in general, and not only do I not understand that trend, but I just want to smack some (most (all)) of its believers. Don't you be talkin' to any o' them thar snakes, or eating them apples, hear?

I think becuase the moment most people here you like trek they presume you dress up as a Vulcan and stuff.

Oh, that. I only dressed up twice when I was a kid.
Coincidentally, I think all the nudists in the world are laughing at us for teasing each other's clothing choices.

I'm as open about Trek as I am with anything else... which isn't saying much.

The problem is that most people associate "Trek fan" with those guys from that Trekkies documentary.I think becuase the moment most people here you like trek they presume you dress up as a Vulcan and stuff.

That's the rub, I think. I'm a slim-built, glasses-wearing, Star Trek fan - many people are surprised to see that I don't wear pointed ears, don't own a prop phaser, that I mosh at industrial concerts, that I'm married to a woman, and that I am a rabid hometown football fan.

Exactly. Most people wouldn't expect most of the members on this site to be Trek fans, simply because none of us look or act like it.

Everyone knows I'm a trek fan. And a huge one at that. But they never question the fact. They don't really talk about it in front of me. IDC what they do behind my back
Re: You in RL vs you online
I probebly SHOULD keep my love for Trek to myself, because most people DO look at me strangely, but, I just can't seem to make myself care. 8)

See, there's this stupid idea that liking sci-fi is some sort of sickness. I hate that.

One guy looked at me and said, "you know it's just a TV show, right?" So I said, well, I've seen you watch football before, and only one of us here has ever yelled at and then punched the TV. You DO know it's just a game right? And they can't even hear you yelling at them.

Yeah, I see a lot of that. I don't know where it comes from but some people seem to think it is the lowliest genre. Maybe we should make some sort of Sci-fi / Trek pride organizationGrundig wrote:See, there's this stupid idea that liking sci-fi is some sort of sickness. I hate that.

I bring up DITL with my friends all the time (although most of them are at least casual 'Trek fans), but no, I don't start conversations with "channel open" or anything.
