Ideas for new classes of starships

I had an idea for a new weapons system. Unmaned and remote weapons platforms. Picture it.

He're's a quick sketch i did, if this is what you were pictureing:



The top one is the actual launch the second one is after it's despensed it's platform.
The ball in front is a sensor, which connects to the computer (the second ball on the bottom image, inside the cone on the top) The main cylendar is comprised of high density material, surrounding the central tube (what remains of the tube in the second one) which is a replicator unit, and AM storage. It also has an impules engin (the rear cone and tube).
When deployed it uses it's own mass to construct a phaser array on top of itself, and a torpedo tube beneath it, which it can then replicat torpedoes in and launch.

lt. staplic, consider applying multiple views to your design. Why, because some people may be able to visualize what these ships will look like, others certainly won't. In fact, I believe it may help you more than it may help us. Making a ship in a feasible way is a complex process, an by doing as much as possible to make it more detailed is only going to hone your skills.

Consider making write-ups about the ships history, as well as the general background of the world in which your ships are placed. Also, start using dimensions.

All in all, a description you'd find at http://www.treknology.org or http://www.ditl.org is what most people consider a sound design. I am not saying you should strive to imitate them, but to make your creations as complete as possible, as close to a real ship as you can make it, because it is a sign of excellence, originality and effort that went into designing it.

If you take a look at my or Graham's designs (mine are Tagged ARIEL) grahams are coalition universe) we both write at least a paragraph about the ship. He generally writes alot more.

I think the Klingons and Romulans oughtta have a few new designs up their sleeves after the war with the Dominion. Cardassians especially will be in the market for new ships that fill different purposes. So starting from the angle of addressing their needs, they've lost a ton of infrastructure. They need to extract and transport resources and they also need a strong industrial workforce, which could be largely automated.

With the KE I don't see anything new coming for a while. Their fleet was pretty tough and Martok led them to enough victory with older ships that they may not feel the need. The BoP is a perfect raider/scout. Its cheap, small, fast, light on crew and can be built in massive numbers. The Negh'var gave the KDF its first Battleship. Massive in weapons, sheilds and armour. It is everything you want when you're going toe to toe with heavy warships of other races. The Vor'cha is just what is needed to peak out this fleet. A well balanced middle ground for the KDF. Far greater numbers then the Negh'var could ever be but also far more powerful then a BoP could ever be. The Klingon fleet has to be one of the best fleets in Trek for balance.

As to the Romulans... Their new warbird, the Norexan, seems to be a well armed medium cruiser. The D'D could be a pretty good heavy cruiser by modern standards and the Scimitar... well that one is up for grabs... But otherwise the Romulan fleet is in bad need of numbers right now. We just don't know enough about their fleet but it seems that they need to work on a cheap light cruiser or frigate to match up with the BoP.

Well, that sounds like some sound reasoning to me. I wish there was as much depth to the history of the other powers as there is to Starfleet. The Federation has so many more designs than the other powers - I wonder if you can chalk it up to "new car" syndrome. The Klingons aren't known for their innovation or acceptance of change. The Romulans don't seem to have the creative capacity for adaptation at all, fleet wise.

See, I have ulterior motives... I'm trying to design a Dominion Wars adaptation of Axis vs. Allies, and it's just lame to give the Romulans D'Deridex with a str of 980 and the Scout with a str of 120. Can't give them the Norexan, and probably can't give the UFP the Sovereign either. Of course, maybe I could give them the ability to develop these designs.

You could make up a light cruiser warbird for the RSE in your game. That way they have a middle ground.

The KDF has a fleet that works (mostly), so I don't see them changing much.

I think they could and should modernise. The KDF is begging for a new BoP design at the very least, and they really need to replace those old D-7/K'T'Inga types with Vor'Chas.

Hell, for that matter the Vor'Cha is well behind the times these days. Doing the above would be a holding action at best.

I do have port and bow views of most of those ships as well, but i didn't want to spam up the db so i didn't add them.

You could add the Norexan to the Dominion war, there is nothing that says it wasnt around then, we just didnt see it, maybe it was on boarder patrol.

I was thinking of adding in the new Sovereign and Norexan designs and hiking the production price up, considering that they're using emerging technologies and whatnot. I was also thinking of leaving the Romulans alone with their D'D, because the tentative plan is to have 4 players, one of which controls both the Klingons and Romulans who each take their own turns. The same would go for the Cardassians and Breen. This is to balance out the powers a little for the sake of play, because the UFP and Dominion are much stronger powers than the others involved.

I think I might start a topic for this where I'll all the brainstorming I have done so far, which really isn't all that much. I already had started one a year ago in the wrong place, and this go is a little different as I'm using GK's strength indices as a starting point. I wish we could post spreadsheets in the forum! But that would be a headache and a half, and then another headache, and ultimately not used enough to warrant the effort.

ok I came across the idea of having a shuttle-size starship unmaned. On the testrun it gets captured by the romulans. Thus the need for the U.S.S. Protostar.

Yes, and I think Starfleet gets way too much attention! I think after winning the war, the Klingons might become more bloodthirsty. They could very well want to design bigger, better ships.
