What do YOU Watch Trek for?

Post by Reliant121 »

Well i've been thinking about recent arguments and conversations and wondering....what do you actually watch trek for? Enjoyment? Stimulation (I mean mental)?

Personally i watch it for enjoyment. I dont care if i dont have to think about it. If i want to think about something, i watch a murder mystery.

Thinking about things is part of the reason I watch it. If I want mind numbing entertainment I turn on Star Wars.

Ha your probably pissing off some SW fans by calling it shallow.

I watch it for entertainment, the rest of the stuff does add a nice dimension but its not hugely important to me.

Escapism and entertainment I guess :) It's nice to watch and imagine a positive future of mankind where we know for sure that we're not alone in the universe with all-sorts of wierd and wonderful technology that, although we can conceive of it, is still and probably always will be a pipe dream :)

I also really love the concept of no money. Money is the route to all evil :happydevil: How it would ever really be practical, I don't know but the idea of the point of existence to be to better oneself seems far nobler than the accumulation of wealth and possesions.

I liekd TNG because it was a better future for humans unlike much of scifi, just cruising around looking at interesting stuff.

I liked DS9 because it showed a new angle on trek, a more realistic future with politics and real characters.

I just enjoyed Voyager, appart from Janeway being a retard and a bitch I imagin thats what would really happen if people got thrown across the universe...

Really, what other reason is there to watch a movie or TV program? It may be escapist entertainment, or thoughtful entertainment, or whatever, but it's still entertainment.

SW doesn't make any excuses for what it is: mindless escapism. The fans assigned it a different meaning. Various series of ST have alternated between taking itself way to seriously to mindless escapism as well.

Of course there's the ultimate example of a movie series taking itself way to seriously: The Matrix.

If I weren't entertained by Trek, I wouldn't watch it. As far as "other stuff," I was young when I had my first exposure to Trek via my father, and aside from having been "socialized to it," I suppose I may have had the sense that anything was possible in Trek.

Don't like Robert Beltran?
