The original script for the final battle in YE called for a truly bloody end for the alt E-D, with Data and Wesley being killed as well as Riker. Unfortunately they either didn't have time to film it or the epiosde overran, I can't remember which. It's mentioned in the TNG companion.

What was the deal with the rocks on the ships. When Captain Garret was killed, we see rocks fall around her. And later when Riker was killed, rocks shoot up from the tactical console.

Typical Fed engineering - rather than just sparking when there's a power surge, the console goes off like it's lined with plastic explosive. The result is bits of bulkhead flying all over the place.

I agree that a prequel is very difficult to do, especially if the writers don't care utmost about continuity. I would rather see future events set up than experienced before they should have been... So no stealing of a later series' discoveries!

I think it would make a fantastic miniseries though, if done right. Especially if you add a political element; Klingons and Federation on increasingly bad terms, it looking like the treaty is going to unravel, and even then the Enterprise risks (and loses) everything to save them.

Federation consoles are constructed with shrapnel built into them for maximum crew damage.

That wouldn't surprise me at all. Those ships aren't exactly ultra smart in the design.

It has to be said, Picard quoting Buddy Holly then leaping over his seat to the tactical station has to be one of the coolest scenes in TNG ever. Though I would have dearly loved to see Wes getting decapitated.

Silly consoles = twice the explosions = "shiny ..... explosions ...... drooool ....."

Dramatic writing gimmick. Cool, but Oi!

We are not that different. We just let our woman cover up more and put shrapnel in consols.
