I always find it amusing that despite you being the youngest member on the board, you act far more maturely than some of those who are quite a few yeras older than you. You should be proud of that fact.

Not unless they've done something I consider worthy of respect.Rochey wrote:So you have no respect for these casual aquaintances?Nope. If I refer to someone as "man" or "that guy" it means I don't really consider him as anything more then a casual acquaintance

Blackstar - you yourself said that the respect shown in an informal reference depends on the tone, context, etc. Then how can you say that without knowing those factors you would automatically interpret (for example) Rochey's address of a student as "kid" as disrespectful? You can't make that interpretation without thos contextual factors, especially inasmuch as you even mentioned the improtance of those factors.
A friend of mine just called me on the phone. I answered, "What's up, dude?" It doesn't mean I forgot his name, or that I have no respect for him.

Well, I love and respect you all and that's got to count for something.

Re: Under which Captain would you rather serve?
The argument-as it has happened here and elsewhere, drifted from the point of the topic. The fact that you are now saying it is moot says a lot for your inability to support any claim you might have in regards to Kirk. I can cite on one hand the number of times Kirk actually got laid. Yes, there was plenty of eye candy on the show, but the number of women Kirk hooked up with is probably as many as Riker had. Mudd's Women, for example, a woman made a move on him and Kirk rebuffed her.Reliant121 wrote:On the downside, he was the only captain to go shagging the female population of the universe.
To be brutally honest, i dont care if you dont like arguing with me. The argument was moot in the first place.Which one would i serve under? Sisko or Picard. Because i like them. Not because they are good captains.
And with the chauvenist side of it: i cant accept it purely because "thats the way it was". Irrelavent. By my standards, today's standards, he was a chauvenist.

I think you're confusing "claim" (as in posited point) with "opinion." Reliant has never said AFAIK that Kirk was definitively inferior or superior to anyone else; merely that he, Reliant, doesn't like him.

Re: Under which Captain would you rather serve?
That is what I am trying to figure out. I have watched the series and at no point did Kirk berate a woman based on her sex, or treat a woman like dirt. This chauvenism argument is based on the popular perception that Kirk is a pig because there was lots of eye candy in TOS and Shatner appeared on screen with many of them. The number of times he scored is actually pretty low. He fell in love twice, was seduced by a woman with a naturally produced love potion, was rescued at least once by a woman (Helen Noel), met an old flame (who subsequently tried to deep six his career), kissed an android in order to turn her against her creator/confuse her (which worked, btw).Cpl Kendall wrote:What exactly did he do that's so bad?Blackstar the Chakat wrote:[

Re: Under which Captain would you rather serve?
First of all, you admit it was possibly semantic (which is potentially as semantic as "Where no Man has gone before"). Second, it was one instance. I provided numerous others that show 1) Kirk interacting with women and not trying to bang them and 2) instances where Kirk was either hit on (rather than the other way around), seduced via extraordinary means or was actually rescued by a woman.Reliant121 wrote:Then I ask, how can i appreciate it if i cant understand it? I cannot understand it. i've tried to imagine a society based like that. I cant. i cant think of living in it. I cannot comprehend it. So how can i appreciate?
and i am bringing in only one item of proof, because it's been a little while since i saw TOS.
Turnabout intruder: Dr. Lester inhabits kirk. Blah blah blah she gets sent back to her body. Now in an extract from his ending log; "Her her life could have been as full as any woman's".
Admittedly, this can be semantic. but if i remember there was a little emphasis on Woman's. Why not anyones? why distinguish specifically that it was a womans life. Why distinguish?

Will you please make an effort to understand that this is opinion. Fine. you want to me to go ahead and admit it. I cant argue the point. Regardless. Doesnt matter to me. My opinion of Kirk stands. Forever will stand, whether there is reason or there is not.

Re: Under which Captain would you rather serve?
In defense of Reliant, not only did he conceed the issue but it was an opinion. Unsupoorted by facts perhaps but we've already hashed the issue over a few times on the board of opinions not being sacred cows etc. In fact if you read up a few posts katefan we address that very issue.
Edit: No if you want to call him on his opinion, all well and good. But your just repeating what's gone on over the last few hours. And most likely the board since the crew of admirals joined.

I suppose that is the problem I saw; you have an opinion, I tried to see the basis for it...and there seems to be this popular 'net opinion that Kirk has stuck his unit into every available orifice even though he really hasn't.Reliant121 wrote:Will you please make an effort to understand that this is opinion. Fool? Very mature. In any case I am willing to drop it here...although I was going to enjoy going through all three seasons and doing a full statistical analysis of Kirk's SF (score factor).EDIT: I CONCEDED TO KENDALL YOU FOOL. READ THE POSTS.

Maturity is what you make it. What someone thinks is mature behaviour at 13, 20,30, 40 etc all change.
Mind you I would like to see a breakdown of Kirks score factor, if just for the laugh factor.
