You may not like him as a captain, but I'd bet you'd rather be "under" Kirk than Janeway...

How do you know if Reliant wouldn' t rather be on top? (It'd be a mean feat to ever get on top of James T Kirk, of course)

Yeah, climbing that toupee would be like climbing Everest.

If you look at Kirk's problems compared to all the other captains you can see how violent solutions to his problems may have been more justified. Besides, Picard had Worf and Riker to do his heavy lifting; when Kirk had a genetically engineered super soldier (Khan) to deal with he handled it himself. In The Hunted Worf took on the Angosian super soldier.
Irrelavent, At least i could bare being captained by him. Kirk to me was a chauvenistic, confrontational, arrogant asshole. He got better in the films but not masses.
I fail to see how my example is irrelevant in regards to the criticism laid against Kirk. Someone said he was violent and I showed that violence in 'Trek was still around beginning with TNG, only someone else did the punching.

I also fail to see how he was "confrontational". Kirk was exposed to problems, he dealt with them. What instances are you citing where he was unjustly confrontational?

Chauvanistic? It was the sixties. And at least Kirk had better taste in women than Riker, who fell in love with someone who looked like a little boy.

Arrogant? He is the captain of one of the most powerful ships in the galaxy, a little bit of arrogance comes with that. I have heard submarine commanders and astronauts are much the same way.

Good point. In fact the relationship between Kirk and Spock makes perfect sense now. 2 Jews, 428 Gentiles. Do the math.

And another thing I liked about Kirk is that he did not seem to be the know it all Sisko and Janeway had become. If you watch Kirk in TOS he has a good grasp of physical sciences (i.e. constructing a makeshift canon to take out the Gorn) and engineering (i.e. The Doomsday Machine, performing basic repairs) but he is by no means an expert nor is he portrayed as such. Throughout the series he is portrayed as the leader who has trained professionals to rely upon.

I look at DS9 and Sisko is a diplomat...who is also an engineer...who is also a tactical genius. Wow, what a guy. Religious icon and all around Starfleet uber officer.

And Janeway was just as bad. I watched episodes like warhead, and the bomb is about to go off in sickbay, and Janeway is telling Torres what to do over the comm! Is Torres that incompetent that she needs Janeway to tell her how to solve the problem? And there are other instances throughout the series where Janeway is telling guys like Kim how to reverse the polarity of something or other to save the day. At least when Kirk was taking out bad guys his solutions were tactical rather than relying upon magical technobabble.

That is one of the reasons why Picard is my second favorite captain; guy has a staff, relys on them for advice and information, then makes an informed decision. People have complained in the past that everything seemed to amount to a meeting in the conference room on TNG, but that happened often enough in TOS as well.

You can fail to see all you like. My decision concerning Kirk stands. IF you believe theres no reason, and there very well may be, then fine go ahead. Your comment about the 60's is pointless. That was. this is not. I wasnt alive. i wasnt alive for another 28 years for godsakes.

We're not talking about who is the best captain on paper, we're talking about who we like/dislike. You dont need good reasons, you dont need any reasons.
What does defeat mean to you?

Nothing it will never come. Death before defeat. I don’t bend or break. I end, if I meet a foe capable of it. Victory is in forcing the opponent to back down. I do not. There is no defeat.
