Some of your data here is out of date. The Type 941 compleated 6 ships of that class in total, 1 active and 2 laid up. The Type 971's Russian name is also Shchuka-B. And there are 16 subs of the type 971 class. There are three sub-classes or flights of Shchuka, consisting of the original seven "Akula I" submarines built between 1982 and 1986, five "Improved Akula" submarines built between 1986 and 1991, and four "Akula II" submarines built from 1991. This information is disputed, however, as the distinction between the Improved Akula and the Akula II class is debated by authoritative sources.

The only 'upgrade' I've heard about is the TK-208 aka the RFS Dmitriy Donskoy's 20 R-39 missiles being replaced with the most advanced Russian submarine-launched ballistic missile to date, the Bulava. Although she was built as a third generation submarine, she is now referred to as a fourth generation one due to her extensive modifications. The other serviceable hulls may be modernized at some point in the future but that is not certain at this point however they are more likely to be replaced by the new Borei class submarines, the first of which was commissioned in February of this year. It should be noted that as of July 2008 no Bulava missile have been produced for the Yury Dolgoruky, the first ship of the Borei class.
