IIRC SOP for scuttling in both world wars wasn't by on-board charges, but by ordering a nearby destroyer to torpedo the ship in question. That's certainly true of most of the US and Japanese carriers lost in 1942.

I don't know how many times I've said this, TNG makes me fall asleep. I wasn't joking. The only way I can make it through one is a pair of caffeine pills. This was one of the few episodes I went through the trouble of staying awake through though...this was a lousy episode. Did Bok? actually think that Picard could destroy the E-D with the Stargazer? At worst it would give the E-D a bloody nose.

To expand on this, maybe Picard set up a program to make the ship self-destruct if captured by the enemy, with the hopes of returning and salvaging the ship. When they came back to recover it and found it absent they'd assume that the ship blew up and that an unknown reactant from the enemy ship eliminated any wreckage. Somehow the Ferengi stopped the self-destruct or something

No, because that's also stupid. He should have stayed in the area to guarantee that the ship was blown up. Leaving it there is incredibly foolish. You're giving a completely unknown enemy a completely intact Federation ship that they can study.

Another huge stretch to explain something sensibly interpreted as a mistake, but it is feasible.
