We have heard of surface installations, though never seen one in use. They could be immensely powerful, given the ability to place huge power plants on a planet, though I wonder what they would do to an atmosphere. Hand phasers don't create thunder, but multiplied a million times, it might.

That was just stupid. Never allow for a single wound to stop your advance. Every ODP should have its own power source, cloaking devices, warheads, phasers and shields. They should also be built in a manner that allows them to be replicated quickly and easily so to avoid having any trouble with their production.

But really. PTs can be replicated, phasers don't seem to hard to add to anything. Reactors seem simple enough, cloaks are small enough that space won't be a problem. They don't need a Warp Core as they aren't going anywhere. Something like the CU ODP wouldn't be bad, just with some kinks worked out of it. The Three arms: 1 pulse fire PTL and 2 type X phasers. The main body (about twice the size) holds the reactor, cloak and shield gens. Where I was joking about the 10,000 part, the idea behind them is sound.

Hey, you guys have a point. If Earth is the captial of the Federation, why the heck DOESN'T it have something formidable in the way of defense? A planetwide energy shield at least? But I think Crush's idea of defesive platforms is completely reasonable. When the Borg first attack, Earth herself had no defense at all, (just those Mars fighters or whatever they were). In FC and DS9, Earth was again attacked, and needed ships to defend her. Just seems that eventually even Starfleet would learn you have to defend your homeworld, since Earth has been getting attacked since the 21st century already.

First the Borg bomb
Next the Xindi kill several million
Then a giant space probe inside a cloud wants to attack
After that a friggin' probe almost evaporates Earth's oceans
Then the Borg attack again
Then the Dominion start planting bombs
Then we have an attempted coup
Then we're back to the Borg again
And then it was the Breen's turn

You'd think even Starfleet would get the friggin' hint already. Earth needs some defenses of it's own!
