Got you beat: We're at $3.64 the last time I checked. :)
 :madashell:
We're averaging $4.17. Basically, one gallon for me is that same as four days of food (I can eat cheap, and not at McDonalds).
Sucky. It helps to live a few dozen miles from one of the largest refinery complexes in the country.

Oh, and I eat super cheap myself. Cooking is fun. :)

Gas is about $3.68 or so out here in Hawaii as well (but then we to have our own refinery on the island), but the price of food in figgin insane :madashell: I suppose because everything except pineapples has to be broght over on a ship, but still a good steak is about $12 or $14 bucks, and a gallon of milk is $5 for the cheapest on the island.

I had noticed that when I was out there way back in '99. One of the locals in Ka'anapali told me that there's often a huge gathering when the restocking plane lands for the Wal-Mart or the Home Depot. Interestingly, even a lot of products that are native to the islands are expensive, because the vast majority is earmarked for export rather than local consumption.

That's why Kona Coffee is so expensive out here as well. But never before moving to Hawaii, have I walked into a store that was really and honestly out of something. NEVER will I forget walking into a grocery store to find them completely and utterly out of toilet paper (somebody had screwed up the order). I'm sure that was a natural disaster for several people and a day that will live on in there minds and bathrooms :)

I imagine it's worse on Maui and Kauai then on Oahu and Hawai'i.

You should head upto the Arctic, scarcity has a new meaning there.

I've thought about going to work at McMurdo station in Antarctica; rationing is SOP down there. You only get to take a two-minute shower once a week.

Every week? That's pretty generous.

For anybody who hasn't seen it before:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McMurdo_Station

http://quest.arc.nasa.gov/antarctica/ba ... tay.html#9

And, I see they've upped it to every other day for showers now (though still two minutes only). That'd be a breeze.

I already take two-minute showers because the damn drain backs up if I take any longer. Drain cleaner hasn't helped to date. :x

Isn't that the station where they just shipped like an insane amount of condoms?
