I doubt there tech is that far behind. Look at their two new ships. Pretty up their in terms of technology. So we either have to believe that the Romulans have lawys had decent tech or they had a massive leap in the last 15 years.

While they were allied with the Federation, I'm sure they had plenty of opportunities to snoop around, so who knows? They might've picked up a few things.

Well looking at the Skimatar they must have stolen a lot of tech and then made it a lot better.

I honestly can't think of a great reason to explain the existence of that ship, but I can try, right?

Improved cloak: probably developed after examining captured Dominion anti-cloak tech.

Firepower: It seemed like they pretty much just crammed in as many of the best weapons available, and since the thing is huge, that's a lot of weapons.

Manuverability: No clue. Advances in impulse tech?

Warp speed: Again, no clue. Maybe that was one of the things they "borrowed" from the Federation during the alliance.

Shields: didn't really seem super bad-ass. They just compensated with secondary shielding (probably over key areas).

So, really, it's just powerful because it's enormous. Since they only seemed to have built the one vessel, we can assume that a crapload of resources went into it.

As to how Shinzon would've gotten control of it, that's anyone's guess. Bribery, extortion, blowjobs, who knows.

The Scimitar is so strong because it has an enormous size. The only great tecnology it has is the ability to fire through cloak. The valdore class in comparison with the sov is nothing great.

Its Maneverability was huge for a ship of thats size. The claok was amazing and the rest of it while not amazing is certainly a step up from what you were implying they were.

Ok great maneuverability great cloak but nothing else. The thing had 52 disrupter cannons and 27 Torp. Tubes.
Built a fed ship with 52 pulse phaser can. and 27 quantum torp launchers and then we can count how many seconds a sov would last in a battle against it.

It was also faster than the E-E and the Feds have always been the faster local power.

So it would seem the Romulans have always had tech at or near Federation level. Either that or they just had a massive leap in tech recently.

Given how little we know about them, it's quite possible they'd always been on a par with the Federation, tech wise.

The Scimitar was built secretly by the Remans and we don't know if it uses only Romulan tech. I don't know if we should take this ship as a clear indication of Romulan tech capabilities. On the other hand I admit that when I said that rom tech is pathetic I underestimated it. I believe that though the level of the rom tech is near the level of the fed one, it is generally inferior. Not by much but it is.

Oh, I agree that the Romulans' tech is, generaly, inferior to Federation tech. I was just throwing out ideas. I think the most likely explaination is that it combines tech from other races, as well.

How exactly is Romulan tech inferior to the Federation rather than being applied differently. Remember one nations design goals are not the same as anothers.

I highly doubt it is possible for the Remans to build the ship with out massive Romulan help in design and reserch.

I believe the reason the D'Derides is so large is partially to look intimidating and partly due to army movement.

I would say at most Romulan tech is maybe a decade or two behind.

Its inferior because it seeme to need to be much larger to do the same thing.

That much is obvious.

Given that most of the ship is empty space than intimidation seem a reasonable idea.

Based on what? Their stuff does the same thing as everyones elses but differently.
Its inferior because it seeme to need to be much larger to do the same thing.
Your assuming that it's inferior because it's larger? Why couldn't that be a concious decision? If the Romulan Star Empire is much smaller than the Federation than having a fleet of huge ships isn't as much of a handicap as it would be for the PJ Brigade, nor is a lesser top speed.

In fact if we apply your logic we can say that the Romulans tech is more advanced that the Feds: black holes for a power source, cloaking tech, plasma torpedoes, military skimmers etc.

I'm not sure all Romulan tech is inferior, but during the TNG and DS9 eras they seemed to be roughly on a par in most fields. The only really notable area where the Romulans were inferior to the Federation is in military technology. The D'Deridex is about 1.5KM long and designed for combat. The Galaxy class is 700 M long and designed for virtualy every damn thing the designers could think of. The fact that the Galaxy class can beat a D'Deridex indicates that their military tech at least is inferior.
