If they're human they do... apparently.
What does defeat mean to you?
Nothing it will never come. Death before defeat. I don’t bend or break. I end, if I meet a foe capable of it. Victory is in forcing the opponent to back down. I do not. There is no defeat.

I fully agree with you that close is best, but we need to think about what may be too close. When we consider the speeds that they are moving at. Hugging the GCS hull wouldn't be a very smart thing unless they have a single target they are trying to take out. The Defiant would run the risk of over shooting its target and maybe ending up in the way of the GCS PTLs. That on top of the massive amount of phaser fire would put the Defiant at a loss. The best thing for a small ship to do would be to fly cirlces around the X-axis to throw off the GCS PTLs targeting and keep the GCS from bringing to many of its phasers around. An excellent point made about the Galaxy class. However, I would like to point out the fact that if you re read what I said, you will realize that firing arcs were not the reasoning I was making, rather that the fast moving hull hugging defiant would be extremely difficult to actually hit and similar to the mirror world negh'var the galaxy could be exploited by the defiant in the same manner. however the smaller size of the lakota helps negate that possibility forcing the defiant to make turns outside the hull hugging ark allowing the lakota to exploit an advantage in size that the galaxy would be vulnerable to.
Any ship that has been designed was at some stage experimental. They start with a prototype which was the Defiant. Its success was the base for mass production. And just how the hell can you say the defiant was experimental?? they were mass producing the damned thing during the dominion war.

True that we don't know what kind of TLs the Akira is using but I would doubt that they are of the same scale as the GCS. The amount of space needed for the GCS PTLs would leave me to think that maybe the Akira is using a pulse fire system like that of the Defiant. Where none of the Akira's tubes could match the out put of one from the GCS. Its the pure number of tubes that gives it the overall power. You are basing the fact that the Akira would snow walk the GSC on what. Surely not on the non canon statement that it has 15 tubes. You are forgetting that its established several times that the GSC are the most powerful ships in the fleet. And even if we take that the Akira has 15 tubes why would we assume that they are 10 shots like the GSC.
The WP is just another PTL just like the 2 that the Nebs and GCS normally have. The GCS main advantage from what I've seen is most likely in raw phaser power. That extra hull area is dotted with a number of other phaser banks. The Nebulas what is the torpedo tube load out without the WP. And what kind of tube are carried in the WP. We just don't know. But if we go by the statement that GSC are the most powerful ships than the tubes can't be 10 shots. Where I agree that the WP makes it easy to be upgraded with QT.
We don't know if the tech from the Sov is workable for the GCS. From what we see in AGT, the GCS is able for some very powerful upgrades but maybe not of the same design. Lets also remember that we don't know what kind of thought went into the building of the Sov.GSC upgrade you mean the Venture. But if you would be able to upgrade it with the sov technology and if it can grow a few extra tubes than why wouldn't it be able to keep up with the rest of the fleet.

I'm sorry, I thought you were talking about the Lakota vs Defiant battle, not when Sisko brouth it out to sneak into the Delta Quadrant or when he was back in starfleet testing it being that neither of those were the topic of discussion. So let me clarify.
At the time of the battle between Lakota and Defiant, the Defiant was STILL not experimental.

Because I don't want to die. Sovereigns are almost guaranteed to be sent to the front lines. I am too cowardly and lazy for that. Give me an Oberth for Scientific missions within Federations borders. Safe as safe can be.SFtraveler wrote:Sovereign! Why not go with the latest and the best?

And fair enough point, if your intent is to be able to take whatever you run into and blow it up real good.

Can I pick Spacedock? It seems so safe over near Earth. And it is really big, with pleanty of starship-sized escape pods.

That probably has something to do with them being the two most powerful ships out there. Is the Defiant very popular?
