That's true. But we don't know a lot about things in star trek. To assume the most obvious (in-universe) answer is what we do, isn't it?Teaos wrote:I think they were pointing out the fact that we dont know for sure the shape helps the speed not that speed is unimportant.

Things like weapons, shields, armour, not having volitile equipment outside the ship, redundancy and an effecient design tend to help as well.Slightly faster? Speed is the best defence!
Speed is worhtless if you're outmatched. And the importance of speed is also lessened in a fleet battle.

So in other words a compromise is the best. Which seems to be what Sovereign is. Powerful yet fast. Big but still agile.
What does defeat mean to you?
Nothing it will never come. Death before defeat. I don’t bend or break. I end, if I meet a foe capable of it. Victory is in forcing the opponent to back down. I do not. There is no defeat.

Not allways. Jack-of-all-trades type ships are a bad idea. They won't be as fast as ships designed specifically be fast, and they will be nowhere near as strong as one developed with combat in mind.So in other words a compromise is the best.
Look at the Galaxy class as a perfect example of a Jack-of-all-trades ship gone wrong.

Hardly. You are in one Sovereign with a maximum warp of 9.99. You accidently run into the Dominion battlefleet made of 400 battleships. Doesn't matter how good you are, if you've got the speed, you're still alive, if you don't, you're dead.Rochey wrote:Things like weapons, shields, armour, not having volitile equipment outside the ship, redundancy and an effecient design tend to help as well.Slightly faster? The sovereign is a bit of a mix around though. It's the fastest and strongest ship in the fleet, which as the flagship, it should be. I always felt that the Sovereign was designed to be the flagship. It was designed to be the fastest, and to be the strongest - and in both aspects it clearly succeeded.

What about the allied fleet you just left behind? Not all ships can go 9.99. The stragelers will just be picked off one by one if you don't organise your retreat.Hardly. And my point still stands that, for a battleship, armour, weapons, shields and other combat systems are more important.

What of the many upgrades seemingly performed between Insurrection and Nemesis?
Weapon additions, for instance, and of course the slight alterations in the shape of porportions of the vessel.
I personally like this ship, not just because it is pretty on the outside.
Course I do wonder how the Scimitar was so easily able to knock out their warp drive... If they were trying to run, shouldn't they have gone faster... or maybe their shields just don't work so well in warp...

The Dark Side is a pathway to many abilities some would consider unnatural.

I didn't even know there were any. Hopefully they made the ship a bit more capable. What of the many upgrades seemingly performed between Insurrection and Nemesis?

They added a few more torpedo launchers (mostly in stupid places with no apparent magazines), and four new phaser strips on the nacelle pylons covering the previous lower-aft phaser blind spot. The main site has a good overview of the changes.Rochey wrote:I didn't even know there were any. For some reason I keep forgetting this forum is attached to a massive repository of Trek knowledge...
Now that I have looked it seems you are right.

I think there is enough room for the movement of physical torpedoes, I just can't think how they could be loaded and fired in quick succession, due to the very small amount of room given. The problem, I think, is the lack of easily accessed storage space. As Seafort says, there is no place to put a weapons magazine, so if the torpedoes are kept as physical objects, they would have to be transported over some distance.Captain Seafort wrote:They added a few more torpedo launchers (mostly in stupid places with no apparent magazines), and four new phaser strips on the nacelle pylons covering the previous lower-aft phaser blind spot. Yeah they seem to be single shot at most as burst fire wouldnt work.
They should have added less but out better ones on.

Isn't that the point? Starfleet were explorers first, military second. These ships were made to be flying homes, not just to be fly work spaces for the crew.kostmayer wrote:I can appreciate the beauty of the Sovereign Class ship, but I much prefer the look of the early movie class ships. The newer ones just a bit too comfortable. And they look a bit too sleek. More spaceship then navy ship, if that makes sense
