I would attribute some of the medieval or feudal/manorial aspects of far-future settings like Dune or WH40k to the same regressions which brought about the rise of dominant and state-sponsored religion. In fact, they would be one and the same.
Kendall - I have always sort of agreed with you - I mean, they can make Knights, Sentinels, and Titans, for pete's sake! I wouldn't be surprised to learn that templates described as "found" or "unearthed" actually turned out to be devised by the Adeptus Mechanica.
