If it was real I would agree. However, it is a side effect of the way the site works. It seems to be one or more people opening each page and the frames loader causing the site to reload. This triggers a increase in the visitor count for each page. Basically someone is trying to download the site and we don't want that happening. I'm going to block it.

EAS has received some additional traffic from bookmarking communities recently. Typically a spike of ~20000 visitors for just one day (normally ~5000), and another spike when it got republished somewhere else. Have you checked the usual suspects, like slashdot.com, fark.com, digg.com, etc.?

Yes, nothing to talk about. Looking at the log files on the busy days it seems to be someone using a site downloader. I've thought up a way of stopping that from working and will likely implement it tonight.

OK, the fix is now in. It should stop blocking the site downloaders. The counter should come back under control as should the bandwidth.

Is there a specific time that these people log on at?

No it's still the same stuff. The block has just not worked. It works with a normal browser but it obviously didn't work with whatever program they are using. I have another way of blocking them in mind and will enforce it tonight, if I get the time.

OK, new reworked blocker in place. This should be fairly bulletproof, so we'll see.

So far so good. Basically the new blocker works by spotting that you are loading page after page after page via the frame reload mechanism. If that persists long enough then the blocker kicks in and stops you from seeing the site. All you have to do to restore access is click the link provided. So far people from the following places have been caught by the system:

tpnet.pl - A Polish ISP (TP)
offutt.af.mil - Someone at Offutt airforce base, Nebraska
upc.cz - A Czech ISP (UPC)
ukonline.co.uk - A UK ISP (UK Online)
rr.com - A US IPS (Road Runner)
uni-mannheim.de - Someone at the University Mannheim in Germany.

There are others but so far those are the worst offenders.
