In universe? He's from France but his parents are English, he's the bastard son of a servant, accents have become interchangable amongst regions?RK_Striker_JK_5 wrote:Seriously. why? It doesn't make much sense to me, not really. he worships Shakespeare. He mentions Trafalgar, the freakin' accent...
OOU, the writers screwed the pooch. Again.
He might be bragging that his ancestor survived the Trafalger massacre.

Re: Why is Picard... French?
er... because it wouldn't make sense for an Englishman's family holdings to include a French vineyard? Well, not as much sense, anyway.

To help explain their poor tactics.

Nothing it will never come. Death before defeat. I don’t bend or break. I end, if I meet a foe capable of it. Victory is in forcing the opponent to back down. I do not. There is no defeat.

Re: Why is Picard... French?
I just thought of something - wouldn't a Frenchman's ancestor having survived the Battle of Trafalgar mean that said ancestor was on a ship that at best hung back and at worst ran away? I mean, it was bad enough that Villeneuve was afraid to look at Nelson since the Battle of the Nile, but with more French dead than captured, Picard's ancestor would have either been or served under a particularly cowardly commander.

Re: Why is Picard... French?
The British killed twice as many Frenchmen as they took prisoner.

That's still alot.Mikey wrote:The British killed twice as many Frenchmen as they took prisoner.
Edit: According to the incredibly inaccurate Wikipedia, the Brits took 7000 prisoners, killed 3243 French and Spanish and wounded 2538.

Did he mention a year? It could have been a different battle.
Trafalgar 2024 - The French fight back.

Even assuming that his Commander was a Coward, that does not invalidate his Crew's service.I mean, it was bad enough that Villeneuve was afraid to look at Nelson since the Battle of the Nile, but with more French dead than captured, Picard's ancestor would have either been or served under a particularly cowardly commander.
There may be times when we are powerless to prevent injustice, but there must never be a time when we fail to protest.

Your quite right. In fact there's every possibilty that Picards ancestor was an exile and fought for the Brits. It certainly wasn't uncommon. And if he had the misfortune to fight on the French side, he still did his duty.KuvahMagh wrote: Even assuming that his Commander was a Coward, that does not invalidate his Crew's service.

Picard moved to France 62 hours before joining Starfleet and moving elsewhere.
