Firefly

Post by CluckyB »

Many moons ago there was this science fiction show called 'Star Trek'. Despite being planned for five years, the show didn't get enough popularity and the producers of the show cancelled it after the third year. The loyal fans, 'Trekkies', continued to support their show faithfully until a new version of Star Trek 'The Next Generation' appeared. The rest is history.

Not as many moons ago, there was this science fiction show called 'Firefly'. Unfortunately, this show aired on Fox. Fox thought it would be cool to not air the pilot, to show the episodes out of order, and then to cancel it before the first season was even incomplete. Is there any hope for a trek like resurgence? Or are the 'browncoats' fighting a battle already long lost?

I run into very few science fiction fans who did not at least enjoy firefly. Sure not all of them became obsessed with it like some have, but I think most of us will agree that it was a good show--far better than most of whats out there. So why hasn't it been picked back up yet? Maybe sci-fi currently doesn't have much hope in the world of public television, but you would think at least some cable network out there would be willing to take the risk and try to revive the series. Often a science fiction series drags on too long (*cough* SG-1 *cough), other times it ends after just the right length (like DS9, for example)--but its a shameful and sorry sight when one is axed so prematurely. Am I the only one who thinks it really deserves a second chance?

Yeah, as I mentioned in the Serenity thread, Firefly is excellent quality. It's really the only other sci fi that I like. Real, there are NO really poor episodes in their brief run, which is remarkable.

It had some more potential left in it. It would have been nice to see it continue for a while longer.

Unfortunately, I don't think the Firefly franchise has much of a future. It is essentially a failed TV show, and Serenity was not a box office success to at all. Although I do hear there is a comic book series in the works.

However reticent I am to say it, I'm afraid you're right. Isn't there a comic book out already?

Would you want to see a different show in the same genre. Something like a group of Alliance people becoming disinterested/disillusioned in the status quo and set out to chage the system from within? (Sorta spy sci fi, if you will)

(this is a short story idea i had awhile back until my brain ran outta steam before I got very far...)

Have any Americans been watching Firefly on HDtv? It's on Universal HD once a week, and my god, some of the episodes look great converted. Shindig was beautiful and Ariel was pretty impressive too.

I'm a pretty big Firefly fan, though I wouldn't classify myself as a Browncoat and I'd be interested in a new show or a continuation of the old show. I think it'd have to be picked up by Sci-Fi or a network other than Fox to avoid the BS that plagued the original run. They did the same thing with Space:Above and Beyond if you remember.

Sadly, the interview I wanted to post is now a dead link. There are rumors of a mini-series that is at least being drafted. God, I hope its true. These rumors come from Whedon himself, not random browncoat rumblings.

I would love to see a resurrection - although a reincarnation might not be as good. I think Nathan Fillion was a big part of that show.

True but the show could take off from where they started season one, not the movie which was sometime later.

Indeed, it would have been nice for the story arc of Reverend Book to have been delved into, a few more "friends" from the war for Mal and Zoe, see River devellop and become more "normal" as time progresses, etc...

The question would be:
Would all the stars be interested in coming back for an unknown period of time?

Yeah, I'd like to see more development of River especially.

That'd be nice to see, alright.
