You're a Captain, you get to pick your starship. Which class?
When Picard was at the helm is was being used as our deep space exploration vessel. And again it was Picard. I forget the details, but at the beginning of most/many Trek movies with him they're starting off doing something diplomatic. They get called somewhere, and usually Picard then blows off some orders to dive into a fight or anomaly.Mikey wrote:sunnyside wrote: Yeah, the GCS had a good track record of avoiding the "instant-death-anomaly-of-the-week."
Now hopefully the anomoly investigation/deep spece exploration is falling to the new generation of Akiras, Intrepids, and Sovs.
Though it's possible the Galaxies are still doing that, which I why I mentioned the Ambassadors. They're supposed to be posh and diplomatic, still passably tough, but they should be out doing anomaly/deep space exploration work anymore.

Agreed, with the war over, the Akira doesn't appear to be a frontline explorer. It seems to be geeared for emergency response, evacuations, aid to colonies, that sort of thing. Then again we know almost nothing about it and I'd love to see the looks on some faces around here if in the next Trek they mentioned it had 28 science labs.Mikey wrote:I would tend to think that the GCS will still be the premier exploration ship for some time - it's still best suited to long-term missions.
Sovereign, doubt very much they'd put such a heavily armed, numerically limited, and resource intensive ship out along the border. Those ships will probably stick to important in-Federation spots for defense or critical response, or major diplomatic events (such as with the Romulans.)

The GCS was seemingly designed specifically for long-term missions; the large number of holodecks, the family accomodations/schools, the arbor-friggin-retum, etc., etc., ad nauseum.
The Sov, Akira, and Intrepid don't have the facilities to accomodate such a duration, and could be considerably more scary to unfamiliar races.

My comment was completely devoid of value judgement, Captain Defensive.Duskofdead wrote:It doesn't contribute to lobbing bright special effects balls at enemies so it is useless and should be destroyed.RK_Striker_JK_5 wrote:Wait, what's wrong with the arboreteum(sp)?
What I meant was that if one class out of a few choices had an arboretum, then that's the one that's probably meant for the longest mission duration.

Or that is was intended for studying flora and fawna of alien planets. What I meant was that if one class out of a few choices had an arboretum, then that's the one that's probably meant for the longest mission duration.
What does defeat mean to you?
Nothing it will never come. Death before defeat. I don’t bend or break. I end, if I meet a foe capable of it. Victory is in forcing the opponent to back down. I do not. There is no defeat.
