How did the Borg come about?

And Teaos hs a point. Your neighbor gets a new car, so you have to get a new car... Look at PC technology over the past two decades or so. Or music tech as well.

Wow, some scary stuff I never even knew existed.
I cant really imagine humans going for a hive mind thing though, too many people would prefer to keep their thoughts private. The most I see happening is a built in link to the internet.

I don't think we would plan on a hive mind. It would just be a byproduct of the implants.

That's why I will always refuse to put any technological gizmo in my body that isn't essential for life. If I should need a pacemaker or an artificial hip later in life, fine, but I draw the line there.

Putting implants in your body doesn't make you better. It enables better access to information, not knowledge. There's a huge difference.

It could also enable my body to do greater things. Physical and medical implants.

Wither way if it helps why not get it.

Why? I'm perfectly healthy and physically fit. I have no need for some computer bank to make me "better." If that should change in the near future, and I should require, for example, a pacemaker, fine. But I draw the line there.

If I really wanted to become stronger or possess greater stamina, I'd earn it the old fashioned way: exercise! I'd rather exercise more than become lazy and just insert a chip into my bones.

Why do the hard way when the easy way is... easy. Plus the implants could likely take you futher than nature ever could.

Unless you know the book I'm talking about, don't tell me to put this in the "other sci-fi/books" topic...

Has anyone read William Gibson's Neuromancer - it won a Hugo and a Philip K. Dick Award, and it was a ground-breaking sci-fi novel discussing this very same issue... connecting oneself directly, through bionics, to the digital information superhighway. It was Gibson's novel which coined the term "cyberpunk."

The best way to explain this is using a money analogy. If you get as much money as you want you easily spend it carefree on anything you want. You'll land up throwing it all away. An example is many lottery winners. They get this huge sum and buy everything they want, but due to trouble they cause themselves they lose everthing. Or another example, and this is a true story. There was this kid who got this Hummer for his sweet 16. That night he was in the hospital and the Hummer was totaled(I have no idea how he pulled that off). If he earned it with his own money I'm betting he would have been more careful with it. If you earn the stuff you'll be much more careful with it. With great power comes great responsibility. And I know from experiance that most people are not responsible.

True but you would have to buy the implants so you do earn them in a way. And it would be harder to abuse your body than a Hummer... I would really like to know how you total a hummer.

He totaled a Hummer? I would love to know how he managed that!

And the analogy isn't completely correct. You would still have to pay for them. And there's a difference between buying yourself into bankruptcy, and enhancing your body.
