Sally is the name of the AI of one modified fighter. Ever seen the movie Stealth? The new pilots would be like that unit, but without as much hollywoodized stuff going on. Besides, M'Real still had top scores at the acadamy. She'd simply be in command of the new test squad.
As Mikey said, adding in automated ships would take away from the RP.
And to be honest, you're tacticle. You should be in charge of the torpedoes and other ship-to-ship battle type stuff.
I am in charge of defending the ship, whether that be by a good defence or a good offence. The fighters fall under both these categories. My main character, Jonathon Hewer, isn't a pilot and isn't necessarily the direct leader of the fighters, but the Bolian, Anker Zionex, is. His entire purpose in this story is to be a fighter pilot.
You haven't done anything with the fighter squadren, haven't even suggested any ideas for the squadren. And you'd be giving general orders to the squadren at best, not telling them to dodge and weave and such because you should be busy with the ship. Besides, who's more qualified to command a flight of fighters, an ex-pilot with the rank of Lt. Cmd. or a Lt. who's been out with the flu?
Rank is irrelevant. You think a 70 year old general is a better pilot than a 30 year old wing commander? It's your skills, not your rank. I haven't done much with them (though I have - I ordered them out as part of the search operation earlier) because I've not been here. Now I'm back I intend to. Comprende? This 'dodging and weaving' business is for the fighters. My main character wouldn't give these orders, but one of my secondary characters - the lead fighter - does. And he is still part of the tactical department. I think you are completely mixing up Hewer directly controlling the tactical station on the bridge and the pilots, and tactical in general controlling all defence of the ship.
