Second question; did the makers of the show not realise how stupid this was?

I suspect that question's rhetorical, but look at the design of the Galaxy class.

1) The warp core and antimatter ejection systems require power to operate, so if power (and therefore containment) fails, you can't get rid of them.

2) The warp core is so fragile that a glancing hit to a nacelle makes it explode.

3) The computer automatically runs alien software. Even worse, this infects the entire computer system indicating that's its overcentralised.

4) Their isolation wards rely on forcefields, so if power fails the entire ship is immediately contaminated.

5) Everything on the ship is run by computer, so when the computer goes haywire, they're stuffed. This extends to the holodecks, where you can't just pull the plug on the thing when it malfunctions without killing everyone inside.

Bottom line, building consoles of C4 is, by comparison, one of the less stupid design flaws - the producers were being lazy so they kept having things break, mostly through stupid design, rather than produce drama through good character drama.

Was it me, or did the three klingon vessels dispatch the Ent-D with remarkable ease.........bear in mind, i haven't seen the episode in years and had a hellishly upsetting day,so might be inadvertently creating rather than remembering

Well, they were the K'Vort model battlecruisers as opposed to the standard Bird of Prey, so they pack a little more punch. Also, there were three of them and the Enterprise was trying to protect the... um... Enterprise :D. Anyway, the E-D wouldn't have been able to maneuver because of the added burden of protecting the E-C.

Lol, I can just see the headline "Today Starfleet sent five battle fleets into Romulan space on a 'smash and burn' campaign. The Federation President is quoted as saying 'I dunno, I got up this morning and I just finally decided that I'd had enough of the bastards.'"

Dudes, the feds would own them!

Besides if DITL is right they only have something like200 ships, so i say lets go for it, then lets hit the breen, their ships without the dampers are just cool looking melons waiting to be sliced.

Then we can use the infrastructure from those conquered territories to build up a fleet capable of chalengeing the klingons. With them out of the way nothing can stop us! The cardassians, gorn and tholians will be powerless before the might of the Federation! We convert our resources entirely to war and start the Dominon War mk2, with us as the attackers. With a massive fleet of highly effective warships we can sweep aside the Dominion!
With them gone the Federation now has a stranglehold on three different quadrants, no race shall stand before the might of the humans! With such a massive fleet we should be able to hold off borg attacks. Eventually we sweep every opposing race in the Delta quadrant. Within a centuary Earth shall reign supreme over the galaxy!
However, the current Federation would never allow such activities. As such we need a stronger government, we need to sweep aside the old regime and apoint a new, supreme, ruler. One who will guide the fledgling Terran Empire...

MWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

*ahem*
Sorry, I seem to have been thinking aloud....

Conquer the Universe! Crush the lesser races! Unimaginable power! Unlimited rice pudding! Etcetera, etcetera.

NO NO NO NO NO, BAD BOY, you don't want to conquer the klingons, they join the UFP in the beginning of the 25th and the cardis will join just because now they won't have a choice by then.

AGAIN, NO, BAD! Not a Terren Empire, we would be the Galactic Empire! A thousand races come together for the one true goal, POWER!
The Dominion would join us for power and order, a new order where only the federation decides the fate of the galaxy! For the century we could do nothing but build, 3 quarters of the milky way building a fleet, a fleet of a million ships, with the tech brought to us by Capt. janeway from adm janeway we can defeat the Borg and 8472. The reborn federation will rule for 10,000 years of power and growth with nothing to challenge us!

Why join with other races when you can destroy them, one planet at a time...
The Genesis device may have failed in creating a habitable world, but they would be oh so effective as planet killers.
None could stand before us!

Because silly boy.... unity means strength, strength means growth and growth is everything! If you try to wipe them out they have to fight you. But if they can join with you, build with you, and, become you, you are all the more powerful! Its why the USA is so powerful.

Its funny to think that, if they were smart, the Federation could have brought so many races under its rule by force, or fear of force.

Think about it. The Defiant is one of the most powerfull ships in Starfleet despite its size. Imagine a Sovereign sized Defiant, apropratiely armed, equiped with phase cloak, ablative armour, transphasic torpedos, all the stuff Starfleet had in its hand and then let slip through its fingers...

Damn, now I'm starting to get ideas for a fanfic...
