I think we've had this one before. The Feds are screwed - the Klingons alone were beating the Feds in the YE-reality, and adding the Romulans industrial capacity would make things even worse.
Any really strong alliance though tends to make others feel threatened and in turn form their own alliances to counterbalance it. If several major powers in the AQ joined together against the Federation, it's likely that powers which usually stay out of it would side with the Feds just to maintain the status quo. Certainly plenty of non-first rate powers in the AQ don't want to see a Klingon-Romulan dominance, even if they don't exactly love the Feds

Ah but if that did happen, a bunch of powers siding with each other so basically everyone in the quadrant belongs to one of the groups, you may get a situation like WWI. One little thing, a boarder dispute, a trade disapgreement, a ship getting lost. And the whole quadrant explodes into GWI (Galaxy War 1)

Personaly, I don't see the minor powers jumping to the Feds' defence. The entire Alpha quadrant was on the brink of invasion and destruction during the Dominion War, what did the powers do then?
The Feds only went to war because they were directly attacked.
The Cardassians jumped into bed with the Dominion.
The Klingons were dragged into a war against the Dominion because the Cardasians they had been at war with were now allied with the Dominion.
The Romulans signed a non-agression pact.
The Breen gave the Dominion a hand.
All other nations that have any real influence (Tholians, Gorn, etc) all stayed neutral.

Now, this was when they must have known the Dominion was coming for them, and most of them still did nothing. Why do you think they'd try to stop the Romulans and Klingons taking down the Federation? If anything, from what we've observed they'd jump on the anti-Fed bandwagon and go on a land-grab spree.

Perhaps it's because (like a few people on the board) they see it as a facade. The Klingons in TUC thought they were racists.

The Federation are alot like the Tau (WH40K for the unintiated) with the exception that they don't crush you if you refuse to join, they just withhold anything that will help you out. But of course if your planet is in their territory and your not a member, they will take what they need from you (even if they don't ask).

I thought it was great, especially when you get to the transporter room scene with poor Spock standing there listening to them spout off a bunch of bigoted crap.

A lot of people consider them uppity. Rewatch seasons 1-3 of DS9 and see the Ferengi perspective of humans.

The only people I can see willingly joining the Federation are species with nothing to lose or are very peaceful.

I could never see the Klingons join.
