Did the parts of TNG's backstory make sense in the first place? How could a species of traders go unnoticed by the Federation for that long, while the Cardies had clearly contacted them years earlier.

How exactly would it matter if the ESTABLISHED BACKSTORY made sense or not - the fact is that it was established, and then ENT trod all over it, didn't it?
