Type 11 (Insurrection) Shuttle Dimensions

Post by DSG2k »

Hello,

I was playing around with a precise model of the TNG Shuttlebay 2 set from your neighboring Set Blueprint Archive guy (Portalrealm on Twitter) and realized I could squeeze the Type 11 into it. I ended up doing something of a deep dive to confirm it, and discovered something.

On DITL the dimensions (LWH) are marked as 14.64 x 3.26 x 4.5 meters, per Star Trek: The Magazine. A bunch of other folks, typically without source, have it marked as 16m long. Hopefully, someone somewhere has actually tried to scale it off the runabout cockpit redress, but unfortunately (a) that BAMF isn't me and (b) I haven't seen such a scaling. However, I did find reference on Memory Alpha to Eaves being weirded out, as hacks would tend to be, by the CG FX shop being so demanding regarding precise scaling referents and "detailed technical drawings", which is what led him to give them 54 by 29 feet. That works out to 16.46 by 8.84 meters, depending on how hard you round.

The wildly varying width led me to want to see the Star Trek: The Magazine specs modeled, and they turned out to be about as funny as I was expecting:

That said, the scene of the shuttle departing the Enterprise-E main shuttlebay works better at the 14.64m length, to me. On the other hand, use of the runabout cockpit may push it higher.

Alas, the TNG TM figure for the Type 7 is equally bad, with two meters shaved off (which doesn't sound like much until you realize that's 40%!).
