Server move again!

Post by IanKennedy »

So our server operating system has gone the way of the dodo. To make things worse there is no upgrade path (worth considering). So I've now commissioned a new server, with a more modern OS on it. I've migrated all the contents to the new server and we are now playing the game of DNS update. Once your local DNS has updated it cache of our new server address it will all work again for you.

For now the old server will block posts to the forum and the new one will allow them.

Hopefully that should be the last move for a while. We've jumped from version 7 to version 9, of a different OS, I'll grant you.

IBM is being greedy and has effectively shut down CentOS (the free version of RedHat)

Hucking Fell... The new server has crashed twice in the last 3 days. Not good. I'm away tomorrow but on Monday I will start migrating back the the original server. I'm already in discussions with the service providers.

Well the world is definitely working against me. I've just migrated everything back to the old server and find I'm unable to swap the DNS back to enable you to use it. Stunningly stupid system design from GoDaddy! Hopefully some time tonight I'll be able to kickstart the transition. You may find the system swapping randomly from old to new and back again for the next 24 hours. I'm sorry about this but it's unavoidable at this point. I've shouted at a number of people to no avail.

OK, we're back on the old server where life is stable again. We should be back up and working. The battle continues.

Thank you for the updates, much appreciated. And I hope it's a bit more smooth sailing ahead for you.

Thanks.

The original server is now doing all the work. The replacement is on its way out and will be destroyed (at least as far as our use of it is concerned).

A third server is just started being put together, we will need to move to it in due course. The old server's operating system is deprecated and support is ebbing. The new one is more in line with the original and should be more stable.

OK, the third server is now ready and tested. We're now going to migrate once again. Well behaved DNS should take 1 minute to swap over. bad ones could be longer.

- This forum will be disabled on the old server.
- We will copy the posts to the new server
- Enable the forum on that server.

Here we go.

So far so good. That said the last one ran for about 2 days before it went wrong.
