Re: The Last Jedi - spoileriffic thread
My main gripes:
Kellie Marie Tran as Rose Tico, a.k.a. Unnecessary Forced Diversity the Hutt
Benicio Del Toro - Contrived coincidental code breaker / unnecessary plot twist
(Cut out the casino planet, let Out of Breath Fin discover UFD the Hutt is actually a former First Order engineer, try to get on the ship to disable the plot-forwarding device and get captured without the Space Horse Race and Super Ultra Mos Eisley scenes)
Dead Princesses IN SPAAAAAAACEEEEE
Luke with all the wit and humor of an emo teenager
Seacow Milk, Fish Nuns, and Porgs - Oh My! (The porgs are damn cute, but for fucks sake, did we need another stuffed animal)
Captain Phasma - Boba, Fettered
Why didn't Laura Dern let a droid do a kamikaze run?!
Kylo Ren is a little bitch
Your whole resistance was just wiped out like it was nothing and your biggest assets are a poorly trained Force-sensitive who figured it was a good idea to just pop on board the enemy flagship to settle a feud with even less training than when Luke tried to do something similar 32 years prior, a dude who is either out of breath, scared, or confused every waking moment, and a mechanic SO useful she was sent to guard the lifepods! - How is that a freaking reason to hope?!

I liked the Porgs. They're very... Porgy.

Re: The Last Jedi - spoileriffic thread
Some good stuff was cut:
Deleted scene of Rey training under Luke:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOcUL0FuKIQ
Deleted scene of Finn confronting Phasma:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpTnA4yMesQ
The Rebel admiral was right to have gotten angry at Poe, but her secrecy about the plan could have been explained as saying, "it's obvious how we're being tracked. There's a spy on board, and I cannot trust anyone."
That would explain better the mechanic's reaction on seeing Finn getting ready to leave in the escape pod, and why she didn't want him to leave.
For the throneroom scene where Kylo is talking to the general, have Kylo do the same "the supreme leader is dead-" "Long live the Supreme Leader" comment. Kylo lets him down, and comments, "Relax general, we have Rebels to kill, a leader to mourn, and an empire to create. Let's get started on the first. You have some units that need ground experience, correct?"
The ground battle has two sets of walkers. The units in front are a mix of the Death Star siege gun, and the walkers. The second line to the rear is composed of more walkers, plus several heavy tanks, transports, etc. Finn explains the grouping as a trainee unit in front, with the experienced unit in the rear. If they take out the trainees too fast, the experienced unit will move in and destroy them. They have to prolong the battle, so the signal can get to anyone who is willing to help.
Thus proceeds the ground battle. You have shots of the Imperial forces making a couple mistakes, the general correcting them, losses on both sides, but the reactions to both sides reflect their attitudes. The Imperials are trating it as a life-fire training exercise, while the Rebels know that the Imperials are toying with them, and at any time the Imperials could just bring in the second wave and crush them.
Then Luke pops in, and does his thing. I'd want to add a scene where he levitates and crushes a walker, then levitates the entire second line of walkers. The Imperial General (along with the rest of the walker staff look at Kylo, fear on their face. Kylo sighs, mutters something about his uncle wanting to talk to him, and goes out to meet Luke. Luke puts down the walkers and casually waits. Lightsaber battle as usual.
Also, when Luke dies, you hear a clank from his metal arm falling down.

I kinda have to thank Porgs. I feel about those little shits the way other people feel about Ewoks. So now I can see their perspective.
Re: The Last Jedi - spoileriffic thread
There was a practical reason for the porgs. Skellig Michael, the island where they filmed Luke scenes, has a population of puffins. Can't drive them off the island so, they incorporated the puffins in the background through porgs in the foreground. Plus without porgs, Cheewie and Rey don't find the New Rebels or whatever they're calling themselves.RK_Striker_JK_5 wrote:I kinda have to thank Porgs. Unlike the Ewoks. Although it's understandable since the original idea to use Wookies was impractical at the time. It's much harder to find 7 foot tall humans than to find dwarfs. I thought they were okay. The ultimate underdogs in a movie about underdogs. Teddy bears vs. Space Nazis. Without the teddy bears, everyone dies. Except Wedge. I'm sure he'd pull out early and survive.

This has been deleted now but I saw it. It's a really good scene. New link: https://youtu.be/8c1JSkjI7-8. I would change two things about it. When Rey sees Chewbacca and R2 at the village, she wouldn't say anything, just have an exasperated look on her face.Coalition wrote:Some good stuff was cut:

More importantly I feel this should have been a lesson about the Force. Rey rushed off to save those things, and Luke needed to teach her to stop being led by the lightsaber, and instead trust in the Force and sense what the real danger is, if any. Rey learning something is more important than shaming Luke.
It's a moot point anyway, since this is a deleted scene.

Okay, but the porgs still add nothing to the movie for me... and why not just have the puffins in the damned film?! And I think Chewie and rey could've found the remaining resistance members without those stupid pieces of shit.Nutso wrote:There was a practical reason for the porgs. As for Ewoks? maybe it's because my first-ever exposure to SW period was ROTJ, but I never minded them.

As someone whose first experience with ‘Wars was neither RotJ nor TLJ, let me just say porgs > ewoks.

I enjoyed it. Ports were cute add neither added or detracted from the plot so they are fine.
What does defeat mean to you?
Nothing it will never come. Death before defeat. I don’t bend or break. I end, if I meet a foe capable of it. Victory is in forcing the opponent to back down. I do not. There is no defeat.

We shall agree to disagree on that point. I wish Chewie had wiped them all out.Mikey wrote:As someone whose first experience with ‘Wars was neither RotJ nor TLJ, let me just say porgs > ewoks.

Things like near the end with Luke, I saw coming a mile off from the fact that they focused on how 'oh look theyre commenting on the salt sand whatever'.
And despite that ability never having shown up before too. So, yeah.
And what they did to Poe's Character, no seriously whut? That engineer chick... sorry at what point did you think Finn was flirting with you because girl that guy wasn't interested.
