Re: Rumours, news and general speculation
So this is official artwork showing the Discovery.
That saucer looks completely impractical. That engineering hull looks stupid. Those nacelles look utterly ridiculous.

The gap in the saucer is worse than useless, it actually reduces usable volume AND weakens the structure. The nacelles don't look wide enough to house coils, and in that pic they don't even appear to be parallel.

Re: Rumours, news and general speculation
Having four little walkways connecting the rings like that will make it much more exciting to try and get from one ring to another in the event of some catastrophic emergency. The crew will be able to swap all kinds of entertaining stories about the people who died because they couldn't get to a walkway in time.
And having to rescue people trapped in areas of the rings which have been cut off will give everybody extra stuff to do.
It will be like a big jolly team-building exercise. Only with more dead friends.

Re: Rumours, news and general speculation
I see the narrative interest but it just make no in universe sense at all.
just like the great pit inside the enterprise in Into Darkness.
i see the reason behind Discovery appearance, updating McQuarie design, but if there is some improvement on the design (hoping nacelles will be parallels on real pics, as it is not on artwork), compared to the original one, the saucer just lose any sense because of theses connections. it's clearly an exemple of (supposed to be) awesome but impractical, something usually found in Star Wars (AT-AT)

Considering the trailer line about "creating a new way to fly", I would not be at all surprised if Discovery has a transwarp or slipstream drive. Why not? They're cool, right?

I am also worried by that line.Graham Kennedy wrote:Considering the trailer line about "creating a new way to fly", I would not be at all surprised if Discovery has a transwarp or slipstream drive. Why not? They're cool, right?
Is it a revolution like NX-01 was or like Excelsior was supposed to be ?
Because Excelsior... well it would be no respect of canon.

If there is one thing about Discovery that has been clear since the day the first image of the ship was released, it is that they have no respect of canon.DarkMoineau wrote:I am also worried by that line.

They said they are intensively debating about it ... if they trully respected it indeed there would be less debating.

Re: Rumours, news and general speculation
I'm praying that the "new way to fly" reference was in regard to the first-class cabins for sale on E deck, but something tells me that I may be in for another bruise to the fandom...
EDIT: BTW, is it just me or is anyone else taking all the reports about DSC as a welcome assurance that they don't need to purchase a CBS streaming subscription?

Well it certainly isn't tempting me to get Netflix anytime soon.Mikey wrote:EDIT: BTW, is it just me or is anyone else taking all the reports about DSC as a welcome assurance that they don't need to purchase a CBS streaming subscription?
If I do watch it, I won't be paying for it.

I already have Netflix. I haven't seen much good about Discovery, but I'll give it a chance, as I pay for Netflix already. I hate the look of the ship, and the Klingons.
