Re: Rumours, news and general speculation

Kahless was an ancient Klingon and he looked like a modern one.

I was too angry to talk about this earlier, but I've calmed down. So here's my thought.

There is actually some slight precedent for this. One of the things almost everyone overlooks about the "Klingon Forehead Problem", as it used to be known, is that in TMP, the Klingons looked like this :

Image

And they all looked like that. A single ridge running from nose to back of head. No unique pattern of crenellations on each head.

Now with these guys... well, I guess the "normal" Klingons, the TMP guys, and these new guys, could all be different races of Klingon with different appearances. No different than putting pictures of a Great Dane, a Golden Retriever, and a Rottweiler next to one another and saying they're all one species. So it's justifiable, technically.

Though of course it brings us to ask where the hell all these variants have been since then...

That said, this confirms the thing I've said about this show all along - it's going to completely ignore the TOS aesthetic, trampling all over it on every passing whim of the writers.

And if that turns out to be the case, then fuck this show.

The issue, as I've said many times regarding ENT, isn't that the discontinuities can't be justified; the issue is that the show should in no way require the viewer to do such mental acrobatics in order to make such justifications.

Terry Serpico comes aboard as Starfleet Admiral Anderson, “a high-ranking official” in the fleet. Appearing previously in Rescue Me, Army Wives, Law & Order: SVU, and a host of other shows over a lengthy television career, 53-year-old Serpico’s role will be the first Admiral to join the regular cast of a Trek series.

Newcomer Sam Vartholomeos arrives as a newcomer to the screen, with minor roles in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and FOX’s “The Following.” The young actor will take on the role of a “Ensign Connor, a Junior Officer in Starfleet Academy assigned to the Starship Shenzhou.“

Maulik Pancholy may be the most visually familiar actor of this new grouping, playing “Dr. Nambue, Chief Medical Officer of the Starship Shenzhou.” A familiar face from Weeds and 30 Rock, the 43-year-old was first spotted in one of co-star Chris Obi’s exuberant Twitter videos last month, though his true reason for appearing in that video wasn’t officially known until today.

They're probably shooting Shenzou scenes first.

How is "Connor" an ensign if he's still in the academy?

The same way Nog was, presumably.

I thought I remembered Nog being addressed as "cadet" or "Mr. Nog" until he graduated. But if not, it's a valid question in both cases; a middie isn't an ensign until he graduates from the academy, se non?

IIRC, Kirk was established to be a Lieutenant whilst in the academy.

Out of universe, it's just a mistake. In universe, I'd guess that cadets can be granted temporary ranks. Maybe there's like a six month placement aboard a Starship as part of academy training, and the cadet is granted a temporary rank whilst they do it.

What does defeat mean to you?

Nothing it will never come. Death before defeat. I don’t bend or break. I end, if I meet a foe capable of it. Victory is in forcing the opponent to back down. I do not. There is no defeat.

It's not like there's a lack of precedence.

"Acting Ensign Wesley Crusher" --- you don't even need to be in the academy.

Which term included, very obviously, a specific reference to the brevet nature of the rank and which, IIRC, was rescinded in favor of "cadet" (as in, our modern "midshipman") when ol' Wes finally did go to the Academy. Not analogous to issue of the question which I had asked.

Absolutely it could... just, in the absence of any positive information of such, I didn't assume it would.
