Well, I see 3 classes of battlestar in the Colonial Military, but I am not entirely certain of which class came before the other. Here is my theory:
Valkyrie class came first
Columbia class (like the Galactica) came after that
and finally the Mercury class.
Am I right, or am I missing something here? Somebody clarify on this.

Re: Timeline of the ships
The Galactica-type were the oldest - the miniseries described her as one of the original twelve built at the start of the first Cylon War. Given the tones Adama used to describe the Beast, the Mercury-class class were probably the latest and greatest, and the Valkyries were somewhere in the middle.
Only two things are infinite - the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the universe: Albert Einstein.

I always thought the Valkryie was designed to be a mini battlestar, not a full one.

Or the converted light carriers of the Independence class.
