I agree with statement number 2. Do you really believe a lot of African nations have resources they're simply mismanaging?

I know they do. Zimbabwe was a thriving economy not 10 years ago now thanks to idiotic leadership it is screwed and starving. The blood diamond countries waste there resources on war. The West coast of Africa has oil deposits that could make them rich but it is again wasted.

I'm not saying it is their fault but it is true.

The Cardassians arent weak.. Look what they did to the Domimion in the Very Last Episode.. Ripping The Breen Ships to Pieces in one shot..
What would happen in say galor Vs Intrepid Same size...
and anyway look at the Nor Type Station... One of the Most Powerful...
And Anyway the Cardassians are headed for a Glorius Change in Economics... however the Road will be even harder thanks to the Domionon useing there ships wastefully instead of Upgrading them and Destroying there Battleships.. The Keldon Class was a powerful ship and was more up to par on the federation...

They had the element of surprise in that episode. No one on the Dominion side had any idea that the Cardassian fleet would suddenly switch sides. Not only that, high command on Cardassia had its communications cut off from the fleet by resistance forces, meaning they couldn't effectively command the action.

Besides which, Breen ships have weak shields and armour, so even a Galor could probably kill one with a single well placed shot.

Intrepid... based on the fact that it was damn near indestructable in Voyager.

I've never bought the whole Cardassians-are-weak line. My thinking is that the Cardassians typically go for the lots-of-weaker-ships approach to combat. Instead of wasting resources on uber-large and powerful starships like the Galaxy class and Romulan warbird, they simply spend their resources on churning out Galor class starships. Nothing 'unadvanced' about that. It's actually rather intelligent; a Galaxy can only be in one place at a time, while multiple ships can be used in packs or split up as needed. Just because they're weaker on a one-on-one match doesn't mean much.
And anyway, the weaknesses of the Galor class have been somewhat overstated; it's still more than a match for the Excelsior and Miranda class, Starfleet's apparently most common starships in major fleet actions. This gives them a healthy advantage in combat.

I think they are lessed advanced in areas but not by a lot. They would have good weapons but not as good firing systems maybe.

The Galor class has a Type-X level Phaser on the front, but it's just the one. Not to mention that it's firing range is hampered by the bridge(?) section above. Now the standard Cardie formation is to fly in packs of 3s. LEt's say we have 3 Galors taking on a Galaxy. That's 3 Type-X phasers and a few Spiral wave disruptors taking on, what? 14 Phasers on a Galaxy?
Good luck =)

True, but that Galaxy would be forced to track, target, and defend against three different bogies, as well as split its fire three different ways. If you don't have the resources or industrial base to start making ships like the Galaxy, making three Galors instead is a pretty good idea.

But then you have a power issue. Big ships have such huge power that their shields and beam weapons are powerful. Smaller ships wouldn't have the power to penitrate the shields of a Galaxy that well.

Look at WWII The Bismark (sp?) Battleship could have taken on a dozen destroyers with ease because they han almost no way to damage the ship. It took a fleet of ships a lot of luck and about hours to bring her down.

That assumes that the shields are equally powerful in all directions - they aren't. From "Peak Performance" the Hathaway, despite being an 80-year-old piece of junk, was able to breach the Enterprise's aft shields when the Enterprise was distracted by Worf's sensor ghost, showing that either the ship angles its shields, or the aft shields are weak. Further evidence of weak aft shields is show in "Preemptive Strike" when Ro's Maquis ship was able to slip through a weak point between the nacelles.

You'd assume that in a fight with 3 Cardassian vessels that they would raise there shielding to full power and combat effectivness.

They would have had their shields at full power during the Hathaway battle - there's no point in holding war games unless you simulate combt conditions as closely as possible.

We're assuming that the Cardassians chose to build three (or however many) Galors instead of one higher-powered, Galaxy-type cruiser/battleship. It has been suggested that the Cardassians didn't have the resources a/o industrial base to make such a ship - my suggestion was just that without that capability, a number of lesser but still viable ships is a valid alternative.
