Good review, although I disagree with Chuck's analysis of it as TOS's finest hour in terms of action. Despite the relative lack of it in the episode, I think that label has to go to Balance of Terror.

I think Doomsday Machine is the best SFX TOS episode though.

I gotta agree. The tension and move/countermove in Balance of Terror pushes it over the edge for me.

One of my favorite episodes. It needs to be in the "must watch" list of TOS and is a prime example of why it's STILL good sci-fi.

I read a review a long time ago that noted Decker's log-it sounds almost exactly like one Kirk would've made. It's a nice touch to show that before this, Decker was... probably a good commander.

The esteem that Kirk holds Decker in shows in the entire episode. Kirk's line "Matt, we're stronger with you than without you" shows this. Having Decker's crew completely wiped out just broke him.

Yeah. I gotta disagree with SF that Kirk might've handled it better. I don't think so.

I wonder. Whilst Kirk often lost men on missions, he almost always reacted to it happening pretty strongly - more than once he almost loses it on the spot because some random redshirt buys it. If he lost his entire crew... Spock and Bones included... and had to actually listen to it happening, knowing that it's at least in some way his fault?

I really do wonder if that would break even Kirk.

Oh, I definitely think something like this would break Kirk. I noted in my semi-ancient reviews that Kirk could be quite torn up over the deaths of crewmembers. ANY crewmember.
