CMS announces a 4.9 sigma discovery of a new boson with a mass of 125.3 plus/minus 0.6 GeV today. This is joined by ATLAS's announcement a boson found at 126.5 GeV with 5.0 sigma significance.
Ladies and Gentlemen, I do believe we have a Higgs Boson!

CERN Announcement
In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

God... I should have paid more attention in my Chemistry class...

Physics, actually. Informally called the "God particle," the Higgs Boson is thought to be responsible for bringing the property of mass to particles.McAvoy wrote:God... I should have paid more attention in my Chemistry class...

Re: CERN Announcement
The Higgs is a big missing piece in the Standard Model, the current theory for the fundamental particles and forces of nature from which everything is derived. The concept of this boson is that it is the messenger particle (like the photon) for a Higgs Field which permeates all of space-time, and it is interaction with this field that we interpret as the mass of an object.
