WW2 On Twitter
I'm not sure if any of you know about this but there's an account on Twitter that's 'live tweeting' events from 1939 as though they're realtime. It's from a British perspective.
https://twitter.com/#!/realtimewwII
It's a novel idea and the project will conclude in six years time, mirroring the end of the war.
Today sees the live tweeting of the events of the Battle of the River Plate
There's also one from a US perspective:

For those not following this twitter feed, it's really hotting up!
https://twitter.com/#!/RealTimeWWII
We're at the part now where Britain & France have their arses handed to them by the old Krauts and a lot of the BEF get away by the skin of their teeth at Dunkirk, giving rise to a favourite Churchill quote of mine:
WW2 Tweets from 1940 @RealTimeWWII
7PM Churchill to Cabinet: no peace with Hitler; "If our long island story is to end, let it be only when we lie choking in our own blood."

Any mention yet of the most idiotic invasion plan in the history of warfare?

Which one is that? Dieppe?
"All this has happened before --"
"But it doesn't have to happen again. Not if we make up our minds to change. Take a different path. Right here, right now."

Nope - Dieppe was a work of genius compared to Sealion.Sonic Glitch wrote:Which one is that? Dieppe?

The same people stupid enough to invade Russia. England would have been a cake walk next to the waste that was Barbarossa.thelordharry wrote:Yeah, who would want to invade Jersey?Captain Seafort wrote:Any mention yet of the most idiotic invasion plan in the history of warfare?

If I could ever get Twitter to work, I would be following these right now. But alas it is not to be.

Re: WW2 On Twitter
I've attempted to set up accounts 9 times. It works for a while, then deletes all my tweets, following, followers, etc. I've asked Twitter support for help, and they have been far less than helpful. So I eventually gave up and returned to Facebook. According to Twitter Support I am not the only one that has had these problems, but I don't know what they're doing about it. But needless to say, having everything deleted and starting again from scratch (the accounts themselves don't get deleted) is rather frustrating.thelordharry wrote:Is it blocked where you are?Tinadrin Chelnor wrote:If I could ever get Twitter to work, I would be following these right now. Re: WW2 On Twitter
Hardly. At least they had a chance of winning in Russia, albeit an extraordinarily slim one. Sealion was some staff officer's stand up routine that was accidentally swapped for a real plan. Take the plan for getting armour across the Channel, for example:Deepcrush wrote:England would have been a cake walk next to the waste that was Barbarossa.
1. Take Rhine barge, sail it to Calais.
2. Assuming it survives the trip, winch tank into barge.
3. Tow barge across Channel.
4. Hope it isn't sunk by RAF/naval gunfire/destroyer's wake/moderate wave.
5. Beach barge, use explosives to remove bow to allow tank to exit.
6. Tow barge back across the Channel.
7. Repeat steps 2 - 6 until victory.
I assume the difficulties inherent in combining steps 5 and 6 are sufficiently obvious that we don't need to go into the various lesser problems of the operation.
