Do Starfleet ships have AI ?
Re: Do Starfleet ships have AI ?
and B4 kind of idiot.
Trata las situaciones estresantes como lo haría 1 perro: si no puedes comértelo o jugar con ello, méate encima y lárgate!!!
Handle stressful situations as a dog would: if you can't eat it or play with it, pee on it and get out of there!!!

M5 certainly would have contributed to the fear. And for that matter, during the Enterprise's mission how many times did they come across sentient computers, four or five? And in every single case, it had gone nuts and killed, enslaved or mistreated people. Vaal, Nomad, V'Ger, Yonada... over and over. Hardly surprising that they developed a bit of an aversion to the idea.
Incidentally, though we have never seen robots in use with the Federation, according to B'Elanna in "Prototype" they do use robots of various sizes and shapes. Make of that what you will. She does confirm that Data is the only sentient AI in the Federation, though.

The robots are probably only used in Mass production factories.

Well, the Exocomps were robots were they not?GrahamKennedy wrote:M5 certainly would have contributed to the fear. *Exocomps*
Hmm, it seems plausible that the Federation was cautious regarding AI in the aftermath of M5. And we've seen that while a ship can run quite smoothly with a skeleton crew and automated systems under normal circumstances, it is too risky to get into a fight (e.g. Star Trek III).
But I must confess that some tactical officers would have profited from a more sophisticated AI - sometimes ships and stations couldn't hit the broad side of a barn (to say it with Kirk ) with their weapons.

Re: Do Starfleet ships have AI ?
There were things like the exocomps, which is why I said "paucity" rather than "complete absence." However, the exocomps were another good example. The exocomps developed sentience by accident, and things took a tumble once that happened. Regarding B'Elanna's statement... yes, perhaps there were robots in general use, much like their common usage in modern RL manufacturing. I thought it was implied that I was referring to sentient - or at least AI - robotics.

I didn't find an inference but AI robots would be useful.

Re: Do Starfleet ships have AI ?
That's the problem, in the Trek universe we've got one example of an AI not going bad and killing everyone it can and at least five of them doing just that. If AI is a crapshoot the odds on it not ending in death are pretty bad.
I really liked the episode with the Exocomps, a lot. Then again I'm a sucker for AI/What qualifies as life episodes.

I never really liked those episodes. Too much thinking was involved
