No? I would think fire would work. Unless the smoke just aggravates them?

Smoking them is a good idea.

Problem with fire is that you have to get up close. In my case I wasn't creative enough.

Best bet is to get an aerosol bee and wasp spray - many are available which will soak the nest from 25 feet or more away - and spray either early in the morning or late in the evening, when all the residents are home. Soak the hive well, and the next day you should be able to remove the nest safely. Just check visually for activity before getting up close.

Well, they either are already excavating, or will have to to remove it anyway.

True but underground hives are much harder. I had one spanning half of the backyard. After a week of war, we eventually plugged the holes with baseballs and rented a small steamroller to flatten the lawn. It worked.

It's difficult to explain but I shall try.

At the back of our yard, we have a raised rock garden with a multitude of weird and wonderful Japanese trees. The previous owner was a massive koi carp fan, and made the entire garden like a giant koi carp contemplation area. Nice and dandy, but we've decided to tear it all down (because the pond itself tripled our electricity and water bills and it's falling apart). Replacing it, will be a large concrete hard-standing for parking car or bikes. Likely the latter.

Part of this massive filtration system, that uses gravity to feed water from the bottom of the pond, through pipework into a massive 8ft x 4ft bank of filtration tanks; is the waterfall. Using a 1/4hp pump, the water is fed from the filtration units, back up to the pond via a large waterfall. The bottom of this now dry waterfull is a mahusive concrete slab. Underneath said concrete slab, but above ground level (it was just sat on an open area of ground) is our bees nest. It's been there for a while, well into the pond's running by the size of it. We're trying to expose it slowly in the hope that the bees leave due to their hive being exposed; if not then we either get someone in to deal with it or we glass it ourselves.

I'd get someone in to get rid of them, just so if they bees get angry and agressive it's someone else that gets stung.

Actually, film someone else getting rid of it, and upload it if they do get stung.

Ug, I've been sick as a dog for days. I don't mind being mildly ill much, especially if I can enjoy not being at work....but when your so sick you stand up and the room spins.........no, I'll pass. Thanks anyway.
