They are doing it in a really roundabout way compared to what I expect. Instead of paying off the money like a debt, which I could understand, they are taxing us higher. We get about £7000 tax free as national personal allowance, then £30,000 at 20% and another £6,000 at 40%. Well they've decided that the bit that's tax free shall now be taxed at 40% and they've added another £2,000 for some company car element. We are being taxed s good £2,000 over what dad earns.

Well I fly off to my next ship tonight so my attendence around here will be pathy again for awhile, although the fact I am in American ports means internet access should be a little better than it was in Egypt.

That sounds indescribably f***ed-up, as well as legally dubious. I don't understand how an income-based rate can be increased to settle a fixed debt.

Well, From what I can tell, Dad's consulted his employer's (FCA) and their finance minister and he's got full corporate support to appeal it. If they won't sort out a more manageable payment I believe he's been advised to try taking them to court, but I can't be entirely sure

...Well that was unexpected. In response to our ailing finances, FCA have offered him a managerial position in Brighton of his own foster care social working team. He's essentially the overall area manager of that group, who oversees the social workers, who assist the foster carers. It's quite a big change in role for dad. But, essentially, they are going to have to pay the highest they can pay to make it work since they don't cover fuel costs travelling to and from work, only fuel costs once hes actually there. With diesel at £1.35 a litre, coming out around £6.00 a gallon and dad using around 2 gallons of fuel a day just to get back and forth, its a massive expenditure on fuel.

Half and half. Good that the company respects him bloody highly if he's being offered senior management positions and he isn't even off probation employment period of 6 months. Bad in that with the extra fuel costs and tax, it doesn't really actually help us unless he's being paid at the very top end of what they pay for that position which is about £40,000. He expects they will pay £37,000 which is pretty much the minimum we could even afford.
