Well, my wife and I had a car accident today. Nothing serious for us, or anyone else involved physically, but it will probably end up writing off the car. We where travelling down a main road behind a very erratic driver so we kept a good distance. Then he slowed and stopped so we stopped about 100 yards behind him. He then put the car in reverse and drove rapidly backwards. He hit our bumper on the near side and then scrapped down the wing, passenger door and ended up behind us! That's quite a feat given we started in the same lane as him. We got his details and some eye witnesses on our side now all we have to do is deal with the insurance people.

Yup, he drove backwards down a a main road to get to a road he had just passed.

I've seen this happen more time than I'd like to believe. The idiocy and overall delusional self-importance it takes to pull this...

Exactly. Driving in reverse on a main road is dangerous, moronic, and rather illegal in most places, and should never be done just because you're too damn lazy to find an alt route.

Indeed, glad to hear everyone's OK.

It's incredible how many times I see people stopping and reversing on the shoulder to get to a missed exit on the Garden State Parkway - which road has nominal speed limits of 55 or 65 mph depending on location, but generally has a minimum average traffic speed of 75 mph. Unfortunately, as was the case with Ian, innocent drivers are usually made to pay the price for their incompetence.

Well the latest is the car has been written of by the insurance company. This tool place on a major A road in the centre of Oxford not long after rush hour. So far the insurance is taking our word for it but that could change as I'm about to put him in touch with them. We'll see if his story changes after that. The majority of the damage can be seen here:

Badly distorted near side wing
Creased bonnet (hood)
Smashed lamp unit
Scratches in the passenger door, mirror and surround.

I hoped it would convey the sentiment of jest. I do know about UK, although I'd be hard pressed to name another country, except maybe India, which drives on the left side.

Although I won't argue about it if you are sure of your fact.
