NX-class (or, "De-technologificating the ENT series...)

Post by DBS »

I had another idea.

There have been many people (myself included) criticizing the design of the NX class (too advanced, too big, whatever). Maybe we should all put our money where our (virtual) mouths are and come up with a "re-imagined Enterprise".

When I learn to use technology again, I'll put up a few basic ideas.

Have Fun!

In my opinion the NX-01 looked far too sleek. It should be more blocky and bulky looking, these people have just barely gotten warp tech, it shouldn't look anything like 'modern' Trek ships.

I think I would try and make it with no seperate hull and nacelles, they would be built into the ship itself. It could also look a bit blockier as well I think.

I would have thought they'd take the old Daedalus out of the attic. After all that was a ship of about that age. More advanced and rounded then the DY-100 but still a long way from the 1701. Although t might have attracted fewer semi-fans or non-fans it might have been a gift to the hard-core fans.

Yes, that is what they should have done. No mention of the Daedalus at all in the series though.*sigh*

Haven't gotten around to making a 'scannable' ink copy yet, but my design borrows heavily from the Connestoga colony ship, only bigger. I basically designed her around the Warp 5 engine (basically sticking the primary hull directly in front of the reactor/engine assembly.)

It ends up being a wee bit bigger than the NX class from the series, at around 250 meters. But to me it makes sense that the ship would need to be fairly big to contain all the fuel necessary, all the equipment, etc., since the engine is probably less efficient than TOS and it takes bigger components to do the same stuff. Remember NX was not only the first full-scale warp 5 ship, but also the first true "explorer" fielded, so it needs to be more or less self-sufficient, which to me means a lot of support structure.

I'll try to get a scan up today, but I can't promise anything! :?

I would agree with the De-technologificating, basically steal a 1890s Heavy Cruiser model and go from there. No lights, no sleekness, would have been a hell of allot better.

So here is my Enterprise design. Please excuse the quality! Watch here and when I have time I'll edit it with more information. It is based closely on the Connestoga design, only bigger. I have each view, deck elevations, and cross sections.

Enjoy!

Okay, here goes.

The NX class exploration starship is designed around the new Warp 5 engine. Combining this great advance in warp drive technology with the on-board facilities to support long-duration missions of exploration was a long and complex design process. In the end it was decided to scale up more conventional transport vessel designs and mate the result with the new engineering hull.

The resulting craft contains ample space for antimatter and deuterium fuel (for both the M/AM reactor and the three small fusion reactors), new sensors, computers, and supplies for her eighty crew members. On board laboratories are a new feature also allowed for with the starship's extra space.

------------------------------------
Specifications:

Length: 260 meters
Breadth: 140 meters
Draft: 52 meters
Tonnage: 165,000 tonnes

Decks: 7
Crew: 80
Aux. craft: 4 multipurpose shuttlepods

Weapons: 4 high energy plasma cannons, 6 missile tubes (missle complement varies with deployment)

Cross-Section highlights:

B-B: Navigational deflector array equipment, forward sensors/communication array, armoury and missile tube machinery, missile storage racks. Forward structure of bridge assembly.

C-C: Dorsal sensors, science laboratories, sickbay, (center portion), forward cargo holds (large rooms), crew accommodations (edges and bottom)

D-D: Sensors (top), crew spaces, fuel storage, accommodations (outer edges), shuttlebay and storage/repair facility. Grappler assembly, ventral equpment and sensor assembly.

E-E: Main engineering (center), reactor equipment, antimatter storage bottles, deuterium and antimatter injectors, warp plasma conduits.

Hey, I really like that! Certainly better than the Akiraprise.

I would draw a rough sketch but I have no talent at art, ah well.

How I envision the NX-01 is basically a small ship built around a large pair of nacelles, the ships of TNG are, IIRC, designed that way for speed. Enterprise era humans would probably have little idea how to make a ship go faster at FTL speeds, so the ship would look little like 'modern' Trek ships and instead look big, bulky and clunky looking.

I agree with that, and I tried to make that concept fit into the design. What I tried to emphasize was that the new drive, while powerful, was pretty inefficient. So my design uses a proportionately large reactor section (roughly the aft third of the ship), and a good portion of the ship must be fuel and equipment to support a long mission. less than half of the internal volume of the design is used for crew spaces. The rest is equipment, fuel, cargo, etc. And volume-wise, the ship is pretty big for the day to make room for all this stuff. The designers are working at a fine line. They need a lot of space to give the ship anything resembling range, but can't make it too big without hurting the power/mass ratio.

DBS,
I thought you did a pretty good job at making a 'realistic' ENT era Enterprise.

Why could the creators of the series not think up something more plausable than Akiraprise? Are they that creatively bankrupt?
