Spies...

Post by MetalHead »

1 - hi all, not been here for awhile, busy sorting my life out I'm afraid - but hoping to make a comeback!

Just been watching some *classic* 007 and got me thinking --- who is the best spy in cinematic history?

I immediately turned my head to something shaken and not stirred, but that got me thinking, what about the rest? Ethan Hunt from the M:I movies, Jason Bourne...I'm sure we can all think of a few...so what do you think?

2 - is this kind of thread still common around here? lol...

If TV is allowed, I'd have to go with Alec Guinness's George Smiley. Might not be an actionman, but he's most definietly a dangerous bugger.

I'll go with Major Pierre Ducos. Nasty piece of work, and the only one of Cornwell's creations to come close to posing the same menace as Hakeswill.

Tinker tailer thing?

Oh... Is there any way we can includeAlester Sim into this one? Not a spy in most of his movies but still a great actor. Then again he was mostly the "bad guy"
What about Harry Palmer from the Ipcress file? does he count?

For cinema I'm going to say Bourne or Weston, a nice even flip between the two. While Bond is a classic that shall never grow old to me, the Bond films are more of a catcher series, attention and flare. Bourne and Weston are absolute pro's to their crafts and it translates very well on film.

A great character, but to me he's just the dark side of 007.

Oh I don't know. He never had the pretentions of grandeur that so many spies seem to have about them. He was just a spy, and a damn good one. Plain, simple Garak. Instead of fast cars, martinis, what have you.

You mean like his taste for chocolates or his access codes to Galor Class Destroyers? Yeah, really simple that one there...

Maybe not employed as a traditional government agent, but I have to nominate the original Roger Moore version of Simon Templar.

For film, if we're leaving 007 out of the mix, I'll say Matt Helm. ;)
