How did Janeway ever get a command?
How did Janeway ever get a command?
We spend countless enjoyable hours bashing Janeway's command decisions and it only recently occured to me, how the HELL did she ever make Captain with a mindset like that? Didn't somebody notice she was nuts when she served her time as a 2nd officer, or more noticbaly as a 1st officer? Didn't the Captain she served under note little things like "Commander Janeway has the tendency to make illogical choices which result in a higher than usual away team casualty rating."
How did she manage to get a ship of her own?

Easy - she threatened to sleep with someone unless she got her command.

She was probably given Voyager on the grounds that she's a science ship and Janeway's a scientist, with no thought given to the finer details of command, or what sorts of missions a fast, powerful ship was likely to be sent on.

I dunno how she got it, slept with someone with horrible taste maybe, but they did put her in a small ship and then sent her to the ass end of space to chase the keystone cops of rebels. I think they pretty much figured they'd tucked her far enough away to not be a pain in the ass. Then she became the example of the Federation to an entire quadrant.

At least Starfleet realised their mistake (albeit it after the fact) and remedied it as best they could by kicking her upstairs to shuffle paper all day and pass on other people's orders.

Well, it shows us (again) how stupid Starfleet can be sometimes, as they also did that to their most efficient Captain of the time, Kirk...Captain Seafort wrote:At least Starfleet realised their mistake (albeit it after the fact) and remedied it as best they could by kicking her upstairs to shuffle paper all day and pass on other people's orders.

So if you want to be an Admiral, you either save the universe a dozen or so times, OR you stop taking your mood stabilizers and run rampant through an entire quadrant getting alot of people killed wherever you go.

Maybe she had friends in high places? I can't recall if she knew any admirals at the time.

I think it was mentioned that she knew a bunch of admirals, but I don't recall the specifics. GIGO, you know?

Re: How did Janeway ever get a command?
Well, Janeway's father was a Starfleet Admiral, which means she could have had some pull within Starfleet as "daddy's little girl"...

Then her "mentor" was an admiral. Admiral Paris was in her corner as well.

I don't recall - wasn't her association with Papa Paris after she was awarded a captaincy?Mark wrote:Then her "mentor" was an admiral. Admiral Paris was in her corner as well.
