Was it being fired at the ship, or from it with the specific intention of being remote-detonated by phaser fire? If it's the latter then it doesn't count - it would have been reprogrammed to fly straight and level and to switch off any ECM.

However, as it was never explained why modern starfleet nav shields are so effective against lasers we can't know for certain if its a matter of sheer power, or some side effect of the tech employed. And the whole statement about lasers came WHILE the E-D was being threatened by said ships with lasers.

Aside from the exception Reliant just noted, I can't think of any examples myself. As as you've just noted, they are small and rapidly manuvering. It doesn't seem logical to put combat shields on a fire and forget torp.

No it wasn't - they were simply pointing their weapons at it. It wasn't threatened, hence the comment about the uselessness of their weapons.

Your assuming that laser and phaser tech are basically the same. But we have no proof that they are. In fact, the science behind what little we see supports a big difference. The point I'm trying to make is this. We don't know why lasers are not effective against Starfleet shields. It could be something intristic in the shield design. An analogy for you. A bullet proof vest will stop a bullet traveling hundreds of feet per second, so you'd assume it would stop a knife thrust coming much slower with less force. And you'd be wrong.

Rather then trying to flood a couple dozen tractor beam emitters with power. I'd rather that power go to recharging the shields and weapons.

For PDWs, simple is best. Energy blasts are going to be very costly to counter with anything other then shields. Enemy warheads are the biggest threat since a large fleet could just skip fighting the Battlestar up close and try to take her out at range.

Poor analogy - if I'd been discussing the energy of the beam, then it would have been a good point (although you're wrong about the force issue - a knife is moving slowly, but it's also got several dozen kilos behind it). However, I'm discussing power so a better comparison would have been pressure, which is far greater for a knife that a bullet.

None of which we have any evidence even exist. Based on that, the only form of technology we've seen that can be reasonably applied is shielding.

The Raptor had a weaker shield system in my original version, as she's mainly a scout, rescue, or second line ship. She's not a front line fighter. I think both you Dark, and Deep suggested they be the same strength, which I corrected.

We have support ships now. The basic structure and frame work is done.

Once the tac sytems are finished we'll need to calculate some DITL scores.

Well we brought up the idea of (a) using tractor beams, (b) using low powered phasers and micro PTs as PDWs, (c) adding more DS9 turrets. We need to figure this before moving. Below I placed what I thought were the TOP THREE options for us.

Tractor Beam Defense
Pros - Helpful in trapping an enemy ship in place in order to make targeting easier. Allows the deflection of enemy fire. Reduces enemy targeting ability.

Cons - Requires large amounts of power that could be placed into shields and weapons.

Low power Phasers and Micro PTLs as PDWs
Pros - Engages soft targets to allow heavy weapons the freedom to attack hard targets without distraction.

Cons - Requires more space for weaker ammunition. Is largely useless against ships of Cruiser size or more.

DS9 Turrets
Pros - Greatly improved firepower.

Cons - Requires greatly increased amounts of power and space.
