Ok, first off, none of the processions I've seen in my life had an escort.
Second, going 30 won't help when they come to a blind intersection (like half the ones in Poughkeepsie).
Third, not all of the cars have a "Funeral" logo, at least not a readily visible one.
Fourth, a good portion of people, especially school-age pedestrians have no idea about this.


This all adds up to an accident (or more than one).

No visible logo? A huge single-file column of cars, all with their hazard lights flashing, following a hearse and a black limousine isn't something of a giveaway?

I'd say it's a ... dead giveaway!

Forgot that I have only once seen them with their hazards on, and rarely do I see a hearse anywhere around the line of cars.

And as I said, even the best sign doesn't help when they came to a blind intersection an d don't stop for the red.

Sorry, I wasn't clear.

There is a hearse, I would hope. but these streets are less than 50 feet between intersections (and not very visible at that), and there are usually (from what I've seen) 20 cars or more. So coming across it in the middle happens.

For the love of teaching? Cuz Lord knows there's no money in it -- at least not in America

As far as I know thats common place here. The closest family relatives go in the funeral procession, and then everyone else (less closely related family and friends) go to the Crematorium or church before the procession arrives. Thats my understanding anyway.

Hmm. 'Round here, there's generally a service in the church or funeral parlor, then the procession goes from there to the gravesite. Nobody would consider it a breach of etiquette to go to the funeral service but not the burial, but most people attend both.

To be fair I've never been to a burial, only cremations where the ashes of the deceased were scattered on a flower bed which was just out the door we went to.

Here, the burial tends to be family and close friends only (or just family), with everyone else just going to the church service.
