could be cognitive distortions too, so that palpatine actually came to believe his persuasive linguistic devices, so fell prey to his own lies

I don't think so. They were so perfectly tuned to what Anakin wanted to hear that I wouldn't be shocked if he'd made it up on the spot.

I've said it before, Palpatine was in many ways like Hitler. He is what he is, has so much power, because his words can turn the will of millions at his whim. Any good linguist can do similar, if not so dramatic things. Palpatine, as well as the ultimate sith, is the ultimate politician.

Not really - Palpatine achieved most of what he did through behind-the-scenes manipulation and making sure he had all his ducks lined up before making a move. Hitler relied primarily on bluster, rabble-rousing and luck.

The specifics were different, but it still relied on the same key skill.

I have to disagree with you. Hitler relied heavily on causing terror and blame. Palp, with all of his plans, played the role of a saint and didn't do anything until he was asked (even begged I'd bet) to by the Senate.

One who acts with hate and anger, the other who plays the role of a savior. Two very different actions and the skills needed to pull both acts off are also very different.

Hmm, the standard term for a chancellor was two four-year terms. By special decree, Palps was serving his third by the time the Clone Wars broke out.

And managed to portray himself as having been unwillingly pushed into serving that third (and later fourth) term to serve the greater good. He probably didn't have anything directly to do with being re-elected again and again - simply set up the pieces to make it inevitable.

Oh, yeah. We all saw how he set up Jar Jar to 'force' him to get those extra powers in AOTC. We all saw him standing there, harrumphing and talking about 'for the duration...'

And you know the second he got back to his office, he dismissed everyone, set up security blocks so he couldn't be recorded and did a victory dance for the ages, followed by the ultimate evil laugh.

I don't believe so, no. I think it's one of those things Lucas disallows to be told, like Yoda's species. Although we do have this pic...

And yes, this is a canon pic. I have the book it's in.
