Re: What's the latest in people's lives?
It's quarter of 3 in the f**king morning, I have to be up at 7 and I'm working on my Philosophy of Education paper. By the end of our four years we education majors are supposed to have some sort of philosophy paper as part of our portfolio somewhere. Apparently schools will ask for it when you apply. Usually you wouldn't take the course in which you write it the first semester of your freshman year but I'm essentially a semester ahead of where I should be in terms of number of credits so I get to take it early (I brought in 18 credits via the AP Exams I took in High School. At my university that's the equivalent of a standard full-semester schedule). The paper isn't due until 1pm Friday but I'm working on it now... If there's one thing my first semester of my freshman year taught me it's that I have my best ideas between the hours of 1 and 3am.

Just had a good 3rd birthday for my Older daughter. She's finally to the point where she gets excited about presents and blows out candles and stuff.
Also, I learned that "Fianna Fail" is the actual name of the party running Ireland. I'd thought it was a variation on a name used to mock a real party (similar to calling them the "the Republican't party") .
Wow. You'd think they'd have changed that at some point , or maybe the accent mark makes all the difference...

It's pronounced more along the lines of "fina foil" and guess what, they're also known as 'The Republican Party'.

Yeah, the accent makes a major difference. As Ian correctly pointed out, it's pronounced similar to "foil" or "fall". Though using the name without the accent has become quite common recently.sunnyside wrote:Also, I learned that "Fianna Fail" is the actual name of the party running Ireland. Well, I'm reenlisting if that counts?Mark wrote:Dude...........you gotta get a safer job. Ever considered the bomb squad?
My job isn't so bad. It would be a lot worse if any of these kids even had the first clue of how to fight.

Sometimes I get the impression that what other people would consider a serious assault on their person, you'd consider a convenient excuse to whup some punks.Deepcrush wrote:Well, I'm reenlisting if that counts?Mark wrote:Dude...........you gotta get a safer job. Ever considered the bomb squad?

I've behaved myself well IMHO. This time around I will be going into the United States Coast Guard.Sionnach Glic wrote:Deep: What branch are you enlisting with?
I don't believe in excuses. Sometimes kids need to release aggression. Or they have never been taught how to control it. Either way, my job is to defuse the situation. Most kids just don't know what to do when they become overly upset. Many parents just don't handle their homes well and so the kids take after that. My dealing with them, and my allowing them to do so with me since I'm willing unlike other educators, teaches them something that every young man needs to learn. That they are NOT the kings of the world. I learned this lesson, so now I pass it along.sunnyside wrote:Sometimes I get the impression that what other people would consider a serious assault on their person, you'd consider a convenient excuse to whup some punks.
I think it is an important note that I have never had a physical engagement with the same student twice. More often then not. Speaking to the student afterwards and offering them a way out of the trouble that can come from the matter. Prevents future trouble. My students know they have a choice. Do what I want them to, or stand in my way. I always leave the choice to them.

Have any of them ever commented that trains and buses give them the same choice?Deepcrush wrote:My students know they have a choice. Do what I want them to, or stand in my way. I always leave the choice to them.

No but I did have an Instructor tell me, which became a running joke, that someone giving me the chance to attack is like waiting on a train to hit them.
Later it was shortened to "Don't wait for the train!" Koreans are a funny people.
