End of Enterprise-D
I seem to recall in 'Yesterday's Enterprise the E-D destroying a K'vort class Bird of Prey with phaser-fire only, I may be mistaken but isn't the K'vort class a more powerful and capable series of Bird of Prey ships than the B'rels?
Still, sucked to see the closest thing the Federation had to a Battleship go-down to the 24th century equivilent to a Torpedo-Boat... but it still served a purpose. In addition to whatever narrative the movies tell, they also served to spotlight things featured in/alluded to in the Starfleet Technical Manual that never made it into the series... like the Saucer-Section's ability to make an emergency landing on a planet (Generations), or the 'Captain's Yacht' slung underneath the saucer-section (Insurrection).
Speaking of Insurrection and the E-E's rather lack-luster performance against the Son'a ships... My theory is that at the time, what with the Dominion War over and the Borg Queen dead (Hey, they didn't Know she'd left back-ups of herself in the Delta Quadrant) there seemed less of a need for full-on warships so the Enterprise-E was re-fitted for primarily diplomatic work (soothing any jittery neighbors worrying about a militarized Starfleet on their doorsteps for example) and had lost much of it's capacity as a warship. Seeing the pride of the fleet being schooled by what essentially amounted to a couple of 'Pirate' ships but for some quick-thinking and 'creative tactics' on Riker's part probably had some small part in the decision to massively up-gun the Soverigns and the Enterprise in particular.

People rag on how it fought in that movie but it didn't do that badly. It was fighting weapons of mass distruction that no ship could of survived. It wasn't equipped to be in that area of space and was thus at a loss.

Nothing it will never come. Death before defeat. I don’t bend or break. I end, if I meet a foe capable of it. Victory is in forcing the opponent to back down. I do not. There is no defeat.

If I had been the Duras Sister, I would have targetted the Enterprise's Phaser array.
If you are going to get a surprise attack, target the weapons first, the engines laters. Maybe the Enterprise fired 1 torpedoe because it was the only tube left?
And.. we do know that the Romulan had at least some sort of attack ship in the sorrounding, seeing how they rampaged the Armagosa Station. Would have been nice seeing a romulan Warbird decloak, destroying the BoP in one volley, and helping the E-D land safely on Veridian...
ah....
hey. Have we EVER seen a Warbird showing what she had in her gut?

I think it would be pretty hard to knock out the Enterprises phasers. They cover such a large area.

I read once that the idea was that the E-D would have a battle with a Warbird at Amargosa and force it to retreat; that's why Soran says later that if it hadn't been for the Enterprise intervening the Romulans would have found the trilithium - when in the finished movie Picard and co just sort of wandered in afterwards.SolkaTruesilver wrote:And.. we do know that the Romulan had at least some sort of attack ship in the sorrounding, seeing how they rampaged the Armagosa Station.
They couldn't afford the FX for the battle, unfortunately.

We've seen the E-D's phasers go down plenty of times IIRC.I think it would be pretty hard to knock out the Enterprises phasers. They cover such a large area.

One of the thoughts I had during that battle came right near the end when B'Etor yells "Target their bridge!" I just thought to myself "Oh, NOW you get around to that? I would have done it with my first shot. No, my first FIVE shots. And with the entire bridge crew dead, the E-D would not have been able to run, fight back, or come up with tricky things to do to your cloaking device for a good five minutes or so.

Well.. the silly thing is, what use is her periscope if she can't target herself?GrahamKennedy wrote:One of the thoughts I had during that battle came right near the end when B'Etor yells "Target their bridge!" Isn't the point of the periscope thing? So the Captain can fire himself, and have the glory of the kill?

Well I did wonder that, but I figured she was yelling at the helmsman to get the ship into a position where she could bring weapons to bear.SolkaTruesilver wrote:Isn't the point of the periscope thing? So the Captain can fire himself, and have the glory of the kill?

Maybe that is considered dishonerable. They onylresort to attacking the bridge if they have no other option.

Agreed, all an enemy has to do is get your shields down and with one shot he's won. You could say that sufficiently large ships have endlessly redundant backup systems, but placing the senior officers at such a great risk makes no sense.Crushproof wrote:Frankly the bridge placement on every Federation ship is stupid. Maybe there is a reason they are always there. I mean almost every species follows that rule so maybe there is some universe truth to putting a bridge there. If not everyone does it anyway so everyone has the same weakness.
