Battlestars
Battlestars
Hello all! I want to know what other people thank about the Battlestars? I thank they are down to earth design, with todays tech (not including the FTL'S). I thank the it is something that can be built with lots of money and resorces. With the leaps and bounds that engins for the space programes have been makeing i could see something onlines like them in our future.

They're one of the few ships in sci-fi that are anywhere near inteligently designed. The launch tube system would probably be better off being replaced by a hanger (or just launching the Vipers out of the landing bays), but that's my only major complaint.
As for whether we could build a 1.2 kilometre long space-going warship with cannons and nuclear missiles, it'd cost far to much to be anywhere near realistic, and be far too difficult to build.

Today's tech? They've got energy weapons, artificial gravity, some kind of invisible wall to hold out space, the ability to project an energy barrier over half a planet and sentient robot dogs.

Uh, I'm gonna guess he was talking about the new series.
Though you're quite right on the artificial gravity bit.

Hey, there are two BSGs. I just happen to prefer the older one.Rochey wrote:Uh, I'm gonna guess he was talking about the new series.

I know it's not the best written, or even the most believable series ever (stopping at a casino planet days after the entire human race has been wiped out?), and on occassion makes the Borg look like tactical geniuses (no, we won't launch fighters, even though there's over a thousand enemy ships coming our way). It did, however, have a sense of fun that the remake is the antithesis of, and that's what I love about it.Rochey wrote:You are dead to me.I just happen to prefer the older one.

I think the new series has that tune as the Colonials national anthem.

And - the original series didn't have an Adama Senior who needed subtitles, even when speaking English. I enjoyed both series, but for both nostalgia's sake and the lack of soap-opera-ness, I think I have to agree with Seafort.
And yes, the Battlestar is one of my fave sci-fi ship designs. And the Vipers rate a close scond in the "fighter" category to the flat, wedge-shaped things from Buck Rogers.
