Why did Tucker have a southern accent?

Post by Monroe »

This has always bugged me. Ironically he has a southern accent in Stargate Atlantis beside the fact
all the other Wraith have midwestern-neutral accents
. He's from Florida. An urban part of Florida. Florida is south yes, but it has a standard American accent. It doesn't have a southern American accent so long as you don't go into the wetland marshy areas and even then I don't think it does. Tucker isn't from those areas anyway being from an urban area as the Xindi weapon shot showed.

So I know most foreigners wouldn't have noticed but did they seriously expect American audience members to not notice?
How many Minbari does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
None. They always surrender right before they finish the job and never tell you why.

He sounds more like he's from Kentucky or Tennessee to me.

Given that ENT was clearly aimed at an American audience, it's pretty hilarious that they couldn't even get that right.

I'm not from the US but I always thought his accent sounded odd for someone from Florida. In general, I think I can broadly tell the difference between a north/south, east coast/west coast accent and if his birthplace hadn't been revealed, I'd have said he was from somewhere like Kentucky.

I've never met an American who can tell the difference between UK regional accents though. We're all from Australia apparently :)

Indeed. There are parts of Florida with a pronounced (to Yankee ears) accent, but it doesn't sound like the accent that Sherriff J. D. Pepper had in Live and Let Die. :P I tend to ascribe it to the fact that Trip was probably created as "generic Southern guy," and only fleshed out afterwards.

Not true. I was better at distinguishing English accents when I was in the practice of dialect studies then I am now, but I can at least tell someone from Reliant's neck of the woods. They're the ones whom I can't understand, even though I know they're technically speaking English. :P

I dont use my real accent. I sound very posh and polite when I talk now, but I actually have an accent similar to Hagrid's only mines more feminine sounding, and slightly less gutteral. Ironic from someone whose accent should sound like This

I once watched a BBC documentary on East Anglia. The BBC (NOT the BBC America) had to put subtitles in for English people to watch.

I can believe that, it sounds like a foreign language, it really does

Wow, an Englishman can't understand him, that's impressive.

I can only understand it after a lot of practice, and living with my grandma. My grandmother is WAY worse than that, especially when drunk. I have a few people on other sites that want to hear what my accent sounds like, i might record a vid or summit.
