Perhaps it was only because she turned up last did Nero get a chance to read the registry and perhaps may not have had the opportunity otherwise....also he saved Kirk's derriere on the drill platform as well! Good point, Sulu saved them all by messing up going into warp. I suspect though that Nero would have scanned Enterprise as they arrived and probably would have caught the registry number just the same. Sulu was very good on the platform rig fighting with Kirk that's for certain

One of the lovely things about Trek XI is that just about everyone plays a vital role at one time or another.

Sulu; saved the Enterprise by being slow into warp, saved it again with handy maneuvering over Vulcan, killed BOTH the Romulans on the drill platform, saving Kirk's ass in the process.

Chekov; saved both Kirk and Sulu from dying on Vulcan, calculated a way to get close to the Narada undetected.

Uhura; fed Kirk the information to work out that the Narada was attacking Vulcan.

Scotty; beamed Kirk and Spock off the Narada.

And so on. Given that these are characters who in the original movie run were pretty much reduced to saying their stock phrases ("She won't take much more Captain!" "Aye Captain, warp speed." - Trek XI was a refreshing change, and I desperately hope they don't reduce anybody to the Mayweather-esque role of "living prop" in Trek XII.

Not to mention that it was his trick that got him and Kirk back to the Enterprise (albeit with a bit of a push from Spock).

I wouldn't go that far. Sure some of the films were heavily focussed on the big three but others, particularly III and IV, were true ensemble performances. Overall the TNG films were worse for shoving everyone but Picard and Data into the background, especially since in TNG itself the focus had been much more widely spread among the senior staff than TOS.

It certainly varies from film to film, and Nimoy's are a high point as he seemed to genuinely care about giving every character at least one moment per movie.

I think McCoy was a hero for giving us all a laugh in giving Kirk 'great big puffy comedy hands' on the way to Vulcan That hypospray seemed a bit more brutal than in previous Trek?
